Jamaal isn't a fan of Doug Ford, but he does get the issue of safety/security on the TTC. He's a daily TTC rider, though I suspect he doesn't often get on the 501/505/506.

Fare capping coming to the TTC in September

May 5, 2026

Starting Sept. 1, 2026, taking the TTC will be more cost-effective than ever, with the introduction of monthly fare capping. A new campaign promoting this initiative is rolling out this week.

Customers who pay their fare with PRESTO, debit or credit card, or mobile wallet, will ride free after 47 paid trips in a calendar month.

The program is part of the TTC’s 2026 operating budget. In 2027, the cap drops to 40 paid trips.

“We’re making the TTC more affordable for people who rely on and use transit the most,” said Mayor Olivia Chow. “With fare capping, you pay as you go, and once you’ve taken 47 trips in a month, the rest of your rides are free. No more deciding whether you can afford a monthly pass upfront. No more overpaying if you don’t ride enough to make a pass worth it. We’re doing this in stages, so next year it drops to 40 rides and you’ll save even more.”

“Fare capping represents a fundamental shift in how Torontonians pay for transit and follows the successful rollout of the open payments program,” said TTC Chair Jamaal Myers. “Combined with our third consecutive fare freeze, fare capping is building a transit system that’s affordable for Torontonians.”

“Fare capping is a key component of growing ridership on the TTC,” said TTC CEO Mandeep S. Lali. “In addition to improving system reliability, safety and cleanliness, our customers have told us they want transit that is affordable, and fare capping helps to accomplish that objective.”

With the introduction of monthly fare capping in September, the Youth, Adult, Senior, and Fair Pass Transit Discount Program TTC Monthly Passes and the Youth and Senior 12-Month Passes will be discontinued as of August 31, 2026.

Adults who subscribe to the 12-Month TTC Pass, and post-secondary students who purchase a TTC Post-Secondary Monthly Pass should continue to use these; they guarantee the lowest fare.

Good news they are keeping a promise!

It looks like you've copied that from somewhere. What's the source?
From an email that get sent to me

What is stopping the TTC from automating all of their announcements over the PA systems? Anytime it’s a human read one lately it’s been terrible. Like they were trained to put the microphone in their mouth.

Most of them are, except for some of the ones when a diversion first happens. The reason why they can be hard to understand is that the person making them is taking time away from talking to the drivers who need to know how the stoppage affects them

Can you please post some context with these things, rather than just text that could have come from anywhere? An email from TTC then I'd guess ... general distribution? Personal?
Sorry I will not do what you want and time to accept that some info and sources cannot be disclosed. If you don't like how I post info, Please, Please block me.

Then that's bad on the TTC making a poor division of labour.

Nearly every announcement, that wasn't a stop, today and yesterday was a human read mess, and it was always (when I could make out what was being said) some combination of the same announcement but with different station names. Are controllers not able to push automated announcements to the trains while they talk to the drivers?

It's always the same station names.

Trains are not stopping at pftlwh station

Intruder on the tracks as foffid station

If they haven't got the time to talk slower for the one critical word, and repeat it - leaving enough of a gap between the words to avoid the reverb, they should be terminated.

But yes ... many more announcements could be automated.

The value of UT compared to less stellar places in social media is that the sources of the news we share may actually be directly from someone who knows, and not third-hand via the sandhouse.

You can take whatever you like with a grain of salt, but some times UT'ers are sharing straight goods.

If it matters, on this topic - one of my equally undisclosable sources says the same thing.
