Yea, the extra tunnelling cost would be several 100s of millions for not all that many trains

Glad to see this reaching media awareness. Hope other outlets climb on the bandwagon.
One has to ask whether this information should have reached the public record at ML Board meetings. What purpose does its Board serve and what duty does it have to the public ?

Thanks for digging out the exact wording.
Yeah, I kinda knew that - my question was mostly rhetorical and a bit sarcastic.
The axe I'm grinding is how little the taxpayer is told about the spend of the considerable amount of money they are providing. And the charades that are played out in PR space.
I remain amazed that there is no premise in common law that would let someone take a run at ML's secrecy in the courts. Certainly the ML legislation protects them big time. The only option available to the taxpayer is to cast a ballot, I guess.

Considering it took nearly 2.5 years to dig 1.5/6.9km of tunnel. Conservatively we're looking at a 2028 tunnel completion date (earliest) versus the original late 2025 tunnel completion date. The project is 3 years behind schedule already. 2033-2035 is a more accurate opening date, not 2030.

The current pace was impacted by months of no movement. The rest of the tunnel should move relatively quickly - probably early 2027 would be my guess. The project is definitely behind but not that wildly so, at least so far.Considering it took nearly 2.5 years to dig 1.5/6.9km of tunnel. If you've kept up with the discussions on this thread, you'll know that recent pace has not been favourable either... The fastest its ever dug (which was recently) was at a pace of 1.6km per year, for half a year. There are 4.6km left roughly. That implies 2.875 years left. At best, 10 metres a day for every work day, 240 workdays a year, that's still nearly two years left. That is assuming nothing goes wrong. Only if they manage 15 metres a day for every work day, would they manage early 2027.

"Metrolinx recorded “concern over elevated cutterhead torque and thrust forces experienced during the last 3-4 advances” of the machine. The contractor concluded “a series of repairs and improvements are required to the TBM and that such repairs must be performed in atmospheric conditions.”
The TBM (tunnel boring machine) has a rotating face with cutter heads that are forced against the rock / sediment causing it to break and fall into the soffit for clearance. Torque is the force needed to keep the head rotating, thrust is the force pushing against the previously installed tunnel rings to keep the cutter heads pressing on the tunnel face.
While tunneling, the space between the TBM's rotating face and the ground is pressurized with compressed air to prevent lose material around the tunnel from collapsing into the tunnel and this had to be de-pressurized so Strabag could access the front of the cutting face to do the maintenance work from the shaft they excavated.
Others may have more accurate info but I'd interpret this as follows.

They are moving forward with station construction anyways so I am guessing that the project design has been somewhat updated because of the setback under the 401.
I believe the original project staging was that most tunneling would be complete before stations even broke ground (line 5 style). So there will be delay of course but I don’t think as long as you anticipate.

As far as I know they are mostly doing station piling work, which is expected to take about a year.
Assuming they must wait for TBM work to finish before starting excavation, then they should be waiting around a year for the TBM to wrap up before excavation can begin.
