Should the LCBO be deregulated?

  • Total voters
    169
  • Poll closed .
I'm pretty old, but my memories of 1979 are pretty fuzzy! But I do remember collecting glass pop bottles for the returns.
In the 1950's, I would be able to pick a couple of empty pop bottles (5¢) each and then buy a comic book for 10¢.

They haven't adjusted any bottle returns for inflation. (Not enough for a first edition comic book though.)

I wonder how many more will have to close before they fold completely.

Having only 1 or 2 beer stores in a city like Toronto will not do any good to anyone. Likewise, all the small beerstores in backwater towns will never survive.

I'm seeing more Loblaws no longer selling beer. I assume they don't want to handle the returns. I'm not a beer drinker myself, but I wonder if all these Beer Store closures might seem a bit premature.

I think with the grocery stores it is a theft and unhoused individual problem. IIRC people were stealing booze and hanging around the store.

They'd better hope that the grocery stores in some of those towns don't hand in their licences. it's a long way to the next store.

in tourist places like Bala, I wonder if the grocery store are ready for literally skids of empties coming back on Monday.

Are there any ceilings on maximum pricing for alcohol at grocery stores now? They used to have to be the same price at LCBO limiting the profit margin to where theft could be an issue. But I feel like now they could just raise the prices somewhat to account for theft.

How would they even know the people stealing are without a home? These arguments that the homeless are to blame for everything is becoming quite tiresome and naïve. There are ample stories of grocery stores not wanting accept empties, with many outright flouting their requirement to do so - https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toro...ioning-selling-booze-deposit-system-1.7547852

Loblaws and co are to blame here, not the unfortune chaps on the sidewalk panhandling.

Most of the theft from large retailers is organized crime, not homeless people.

Yep, a friend of mine works at an LCBO, She told me they have had guys walk in with duffel bags and walk out with thousands of dollars with of expensive booze within minutes. The car is parked outside the door, with bogus license plates of course. Alcohol is just just like phones or cars or jewellery, it all gets shipped overseas to their fellow gang membrs in foreign counties, who pay a pretty penny for it. Alcohol is banned or severely restricted in a lot parts of the world.
