I would also be curious to see the numbers on returns in Ontario vs NY state. Any time I have been to return empties in Ontario, there is a lot of volume of bottles and people often lined up waiting. I haven’t seen that kind of volume while grocery shopping in NY (which I have done many times).

Yes there is huge line ups at the beer store for returns. But where else are we going to take our empties back? In NY state you can take empties back to all grocery store/ beer stores, bottle return depot's, and they will even come to your house to pick up the empties. They have automated empties return machines, makes it so fast and easy. At the Beer Store i have actually gave my empties to the guy in front me rather than waste 15 minutes of my life for 6 bucks worth of empties.

I was in BC last year. It was great, you don't have to sort anything! Just put everything in a clear bag. Bring it to the bottle return depot, and the machine does all the work. And if don't like carrying money or change around like my nephew. You can get the deposit money cashless, just download the app on your phone. Can't do that at the Beer Store!

My mother and I were talking about this earlier.

She grew up in West Hill and that Beer Store was there since the 70s. It will be a loss for the community.

Man, did the Province F up the beverage recycling program! We've discussed this a lot up thread, but they should have had a contingency in place before they killed the Beer Store (which they essentially have done)

On paper, they do have a plan.

Every booze selling grocer above the minimum size will have to do deposit/return effective January 1st.

OF course.........its not at all clear that grocers will cooperate, a lot are considering dumping their licenses and others are musing about daring the government not to ship to them and putting up signage over any empty shelves saying why they're empty.

In the game of chicken, TBD

Agreed.

But I (Danforth/Coxwell) will be down to zero walkable Beer Stores soon, with the next closest (Danforth and VP) slated for redevelopment, if it doesn't get closed.

Anyway, hope this gets resolved à la British Columbia or similar.

Indeed. It will be interesting to see who blinks first, or if the government ponies up some 'incentive' money to encourage stores to keep their licence. In some of the announced and previously announced locations, it's a loooong way to the next nearest Beer Store.

Yeah, in theory, Sobeys would be your closest location. Which is a bit of a hike.

In USA, even supermarket stores (including Wal-Mart) do bottle and can returns, including non-alcoholic, using machines. If they can do it, so can Ontario supermarkets and groceries.
I think if we had a wider-based general bottle/can deposit-return system like many other jurisdictions it would work a lot better. As it stands, it is only alcohol containers. One of our local stores has posted a notice reminding that they only accept alcohol containers, not all bottles and cans.

In the past (the 80s?) Ontario grocery stores would accept returns on glass pop bottles (Coke, Pepsi, etc.)

I remember this as a kid. And stores were much smaller then, the typical grocery store was no more than 1/2 the size of today's...

Corner/convenience stores would also accept returns. (Anyone remember that the 1.5L glass bottles were at risk of shattering when they were first introduced in 1979, so they were recalled and the solution was to put a plastic coating on them?)

You're not old enough to remember that............who told you, your mother-in-law? LOL
