I think Yellowhead Trail opened around 1982 (from east to west). I remember seeing some of the construction (e.g., 97 Street overpass, Yellowhead Trail around municipal airport) when I was 16.

Less than half a million people. Let’s build a subway 😳
I would love to know the conversations back then about it because it’s actually hilarious that the most urban/big city transit feel downtown was built when we were the same size as London, Ontario.

We probably had Waterloo-Kitchener's population when their LRT was built. Also, Edmonton was also growing rapidly in the 1970's, and pioneers with the LRT.

Anybody here remember when the eastern section of the Yellowhead was called the Santa Ana Freeway, or something along those lines? No joke.

Driving by the Yellowhead/121 Street interchange construction, I saw some retaining wall construction around the overpass pilings.

The 107 St and Yellowhead intersection work from last week.

Yesterday afternoon I drove the Yellowhead Trail from St Albert Trail to the east end of the Henday. The 127 St interchange is progressing nicely. The section between 121 St and 107 St has ramped up in a major way. Nothing is happening at 66 St but that could change next year. And finally, the Beverly Bridge over the North Saskatchewan River is undergoing a major rehab.

"The new Yellowhead Trail opened in 1970, although work to add lanes continued until 1984."

That is a typo. I don't think Yellowhead Trail opened until about 1980 or so.

Off topic, but I noticed that Calgary Trail didn't transition to 103 / 104 St (that eventually became one way streets) until 51 Ave. It would have been nice if city forefathers would have reserved a ROW to allow free flow up to Whitemud Drive. I don't know if it was too late in 1975, but c'est la vie.
