The used car lot appears to be cleared out as I drove by yesterday.

"The new Yellowhead Trail opened in 1970, although work to add lanes continued until 1984."

That is a typo. I don't think Yellowhead Trail opened until about 1980 or so.

Off topic, but I noticed that Calgary Trail didn't transition to 103 / 104 St (that eventually became one way streets) until 51 Ave. It would have been nice if city forefathers would have reserved a ROW to allow free flow up to Whitemud Drive. I don't know if it was too late in 1975, but c'est la vie.

91 Street was the reserved ROW.

There was a lot of opposition to the METS plan at the time.
Thank God for that. The original plan was for 91st to be the freeway entrance to the city, they were then gonna bulldoze Mill Creek Ravine to make it a straight shot into downtown. It's why 91st is so wide and then dead ends at the ravine. All the ROWs are along there. Horrific.

I thought the METS plan might have been dead (or on life support) by the mid 70s. Isn't Yellowhead Trail a 'Plan B' of METS? There probably wouldn't have been the need for the current Yellowhead Trail alignment had it followed the MacKinnon Ravine, James McDonald Bridge, etc.

Assuming Hwy 2 still follows its current alignment via Whitemud Drive, taking advantage of the 91 St ROW to the south might have been better than Gateway Blvd/Calgary Trail.

IIRC, METS had a trident interchange at the south end where 91 St, Calgary Trail, and 111 St would converge.

Drove the Head for the first time in years and boy oh boy is that expansion a bigger project in person than on paper…..I was just saying to myself, “why haven’t they started to string beams for the 127th deck yet”…..seems that they just poured the abutments not too long ago…..
