It’s been brutal. The area also has struggled for years. Covid destroyed it with social disorder. Most people I know in glenwood, west jasper place, Crestwood….all walkable to SPR, never go there. Partially due to construction, but mostly due to the death spiral of crime and a lack of good businesses.

Scariest interaction of my life with a knife getting pulled on me with my wife was the Tim Hortons on SPR. My neighbour was jumped and beat to crap there. The temporary shelters they added brought so many issues.

We are decades from SPR recovering…
Yeah, I drove along that stretch of that stretch of the line on Monday and it’s f*cked. Just about everything is boarded up or an empty pit or a pawn/vape/liquor store.

Maybe, just maybe its not the fault of SJW's that downtown has a lot of social issues, and more the fact that both sides of the political aisle aren't taking any significant steps in proactively and re-actively addressing the growing homelessness population and subsequent increase in addiction and crime. What we are seeing now is the result of decades of inaction and sweeping the problem under the rug (the rug in this case is central Edmonton). If you want a safer cleaner city then do something about it instead of whining in a forum about how you'll never go on transit and only hide far away in the suburbs where the homeless can't get to you.
You say there has been "decades of inaction and sweeping the problem under the rug" with regards to homelessness and addiction. You say people who are tired of this issue should stop "whining in a forum" and "hide far aways in the suburbs." I think Canadians pay a lot of taxes, and taxes are used to support programs and subsidized housing in Edmonton that are there to help homeless addicts - however, most homeless addicts refuse, or don't stay in provided housing long because they are not willing to follow the rules. Basically, they don't like rules that prohibit them from doing drugs in social housing. Also, the amount of tax money spent on policing and health care connected to homeless addicts must be astronomical. ERs across the nation are backed up and a big issue for this is due to unhealthy homeless addicts with their never ending health issues, injuries and ailments. Homeless addicts don't work, don't pay taxes and contribute very little to society - most of them are working age and should be economically active and contributing to society but all they do is take from society. When tax paying law abiding citizens, many of whom live in the suburbs, voice concerns over this issue it doesn't take long for the sanctimonious response from the "progressive" community with their usual annoying combo of condescension and righteous superiority. Empathy has limits. This problem has not been "swept under the rug" and there has not been "decades of inaction" - quite the opposite actually. Perhaps homeless addicts can make a better effort to be responsible for their lives and take the substantial amount of housing and recovery support offered to them instead of constantly blaming others.

100% and the more businesses/buildings lost the worst things get.

I really hope for SPR but from 149-163 I am exceptionally bearish on and it's going to be a long time before it gets better than it is now, nevermind how it was a few years ago.

As a Local Resident: SPR is still dying (In terms of Street Life)
and I highly Suspect it will become a suburban style power centre in ~50 years when they decide to just give up

There are development proposals where the DP has been stuck in Red Tape,
and Daycares are Currently Flooding into the Area for some Reason

I see it taking 20 years before it begins to actually change

But 2025 so far has seen less Crime and Crazy S*** and the Homeless that are still here are more Chill (in my own personal Experiences)

But We should probably continue the SPR Discussion on a Dedicated SPR Thread that I just started

If they finish all the segments by September, would they be able to convert the roadways into their final configuration by the end of this construction season, even if they still have to lay the rails and catenary on the guideway afterwards?

They aren’t finishing that stretch of roadworks this year, as they have to do the other side still on almost all of meadowlark road - AHD.
