I was about to say "who's the jackass who already tagged the newly refurbished pods?" You got me @kotsy

With this barren land, I just want them to get on with building this damn spa. I'm fully aware that this was Ford's angle all along, cut down the forest, clear the buildings so there's. nothing to save and the resistance to this virtually disappears. Honestly, I haven't heard about the Ontario Place for All folks for a while now.

When does this get going? Are there permits taken out to build it?
To be fair, I feel like "mega spa" was just a marketing term that ended up being used to make people angry. It's an indoor water park, that's the main purpose it serves. They're also building a massive public park around the whole island with a decent sized public beach, and they've committed 200 million for shoreline restoration and naturalization, and wildlife habitats, including replacing trees at a 6:1 ratio. Although I don't support whatever the hell got us here, I've gotten to a point now where I'm just looking forward to what they do with the place

Yeah - I'm not posting my thoughts on this story - can't say I'm shocked is all I'll say.

Former city councillor and ex-MP Adam Vaughan, long one of the sharpest critics of Doug Ford's plans for Toronto's waterfront, is now working for Therme Canada, the company developing a luxury spa at Ontario Place.

In an interview with CBC News, Vaughan revealed that he has been hired as a senior adviser to Therme, the Austrian company granted a 95-year lease to build a destination spa and indoor water park on the west island of Ontario Place, the provincially-owned site on the city's lakeshore.

Vaughan describes his job with Therme as "speaking to the public about what an incredible project this is" and heaped praise on Ontario's premier for the overall vision.

^Er...thanks, Adam. They're probably paying you well to say that too.

...BTW, is this an Austrian or a Romanian company? I thought it's origins where in dispute here.

The public has been sold a bunch of BS with this project. I'll believe there is any net benefit to the public when it's done. For now, I have to base my opinions on the bad faith of the government and everyone involved with this project.

During the Osgoode Hall tree protests and lawsuit, Ford also promised that he'd restore the trees — "twice as many" he said. When I went to the Open House, I noticed in the architectural drawings that the station box was shallow beneath the surface, making it impossible to plant trees and the Metrolinx engineer there conceeded point blank: "yeah, no trees".

So, we have to hold Ford to the revised version of Therme with the publicly accessible green roofs and wide shoreline which is why I'm eager to see the finished drawings and city approvals.

I don't see how they replace trees at a 6:1 ratio. Where there was a dense forrest, there'll be a large building and a beach. Where do six times as many trees go? Certainly not on the roof. The green in the drawing is meant to deceive the eye. That's some sort of brush with a few scattered trees.

So yeah, this isn't even a 1:1 tree replacement, let alone six.

As for the building, as far as im aware Therme takes construction posession before next winter.
Last I heard Ford wanted to move it up, obviously doable as most site-prep is done by now

Seriously, just build the thing. That's where I'm at. Ford bulldozed his way through this against the community like everything else he does. The damage is done, there's no going back. I'm not convinced there'll be an ongoing appeal for an indoor spa that'll generate enough revenue to keep a private business afloat for 95 years. But when it inevitably fails, a kinder Provincial government can turn it into a public pool and the parking garage can be handed over to Metrolinx or the TTC to encourage parking outside of downtown and taking the Ontario Line and streetcars into the city to alleviate gridlock.

Why pull a picture of ontario place from the mid 2000s?

While the park they're building around the main building seems nice, it shouldn't be forgotten that the beach is being built by polluted water that the province hasn't commented on thus far from what I've seen.

I cannot think of enough bad things to say about Adam Vaughn right now. What a transactionally minded garbage person. Is he also running in Alberta?

The water outside of the inner harbour is safe to swim in. It's the same water people swim in at Humber Bay beaches just west of Ontario Place.

The beach being proposed here is facing west, not to be confused with the beach in an earlier John Tory proposal inside the marina/harbour.

This beach on the West Island, facing west towards the open lake:

Not this (see Echo beach which would have become a real beach)

Why not? It was pretty much how OP looked from that angle until this government started bulldozing it all for dodgy reasons.
Bro, Theres only 1 reason why nightstreak used that image, its because he couldnt be bothered to scroll more than the the 1st row of the google image search to "prove his point"
I could also do the same with an image in the winter of Ontario Place. proves the exact opposite

That wouldn't prove anything.
No trees were removed on the West Island until last year.

Why is everyone now assuming this thing is going to get built? Did they suddenly find someone to pay for it?
The NY Times article from a couple of weeks back reported that this Therme (not the larger one they were apparently pretending to be) "was losing money and had less than 1 million euro (about $1.1 million) in equity" when they pitched the idea, and "has yet to secure outside investment for its Toronto project."

That's not very convincing reason to object it...unless you are looking for something with a No True Scotsman bellowing on bagpipes ontop of one to those domes-that-was there. As the pic in question represents evidence of the way things mostly where before it got nuked I suspect as far as anyone else is reasonably concerned here. So that's good enough, IMO. Sorry if that upsets you though. /shrug.
