These stadiums aren't expandable though, are they? As much as we may lament the design of BMO it does allow it to be temporarily expanded for specific events. Unfortunately the World Cup is one of those events for temporary rather than permanent expansion.

As for the North Stand, that entire area is currently cut off from the rest of the stadium as it is being prepped for the luxury boxes being built there.

I believe this design allows for seats to fill in the area between the first row of boxes and the pitch in a soccer configuration. That will make the stadium look way better as it will have a complete lower bowl. If TFC attendance increases, we may see this sooner than later.

Let's be clear here. BMO is going to host a handful of group stage matches, and a round of 32 match. It won't be hosting any of the major countries, or any semi final/final matches. It's literally an afterthought compared to some of the venues being used in Mexico/USA. Previous world cups have hosted matches in temporary stadiums (looking at you stadium 974) that were torn down afterwards, so BMO is far from the worst building to ever host a World Cup match.

We can't be sure of the major countries tho, depending of the final draw it can end up hosting group games for Brazil, Germany or Argentina. I wont rule out a big team playing here yet, even if it is group stage.

Edit: Just Checked the officiel schedule. BMO will host the inaugural match from group L, which is L1 vs L3. L1 will be a top seeded team so yes, we could have Brazil, Argentina, France or Germany playing here.

Canada will be placed in Pot 1 as host country and so we cannot draw any teams likely ranked in the top 10 of FIFA rankings. Canada is L1.

As the rankings currently stand it's possible we end up with a Germany or Croatia or Japan or Uruguay, but we won't be landing Brazil, Argentina, France, Spain, England etc in the group stage. I don't even think FIFA Rankings can shift that much between now and then, lest those teams fail to qualify at all.

I am afraid that is not correct. Canada will be B1, playing its first match in Toronto and the other 2 in Vancouver.

Aside from group B opening, Toronto will host 2 matches from group L, including the opening match of that group, which is L1 vs L3.

L1 can be any top seeded team except from the hosts that are already planted (Mexico is A1, Canada is B1 and USA is C1).

After next year's World Cup, could we see more FIFA events in Toronto?
It's entirely possible. If FIFA sees CWC as a moneygrab cup to play more often they'll need to find more hosts and fans willing to fork over money for it.

What this means for current tenants at BMO is anyone's guess, but i'm particularly interested to see if Rogers holds onto the Argos or if they pivot from CFL entirely, as all of the programming they're looking at adding at BMO in the coming years (increased Canada Soccer matches, NSL matches, etc.) is going to come at the cost of the tenants in some way or another, and all of it consists of the sport with the round ball and not the pointy one.

I wonder if the demand from summer concerts and annual soccer/NFL exhibitions could support a new 50,000 Toronto stadium. A sort of permanent "Rogers Stadium" that we have in Downsview currently.

I am getting the sense that some people still seem to think that there is interest in the NFL outside The States.

I was under the impression that the currently-temporary Rogers Stadium existed as a trial run for a purpose-built stadium on that site.

Money and ego talk and I believe Rogers has enough of both. It'll happen if he wants it to happen.

Regardless of whether or not we land an NFL team I think it's reasonable to begin looking into a secondary stadium for the market. BMO has limitations and if there isn't any serious plan to expand it then the region will need a larger venue for larger events, whether they're concerts or soccer or NFL.

I like the idea if it were needed but the SkyDome holds that many already. 55,000 in fact, more than Rogers Stadium's 50K. I know The Blue Jays said that the SkyDome would no longer be a multipurpose stadium and would be meant for baseball exclusively, but they've already held a dozen concerts there since it was renovated.

A walk from Union Station with subway and regional and national rail and just off a major highway, surrounded by hundreds of restaurants and shops and thousands of hotel rooms, it could not be better situated for the kind of concerts that Rogers Stadium has failed at supporting. BMO Field after the Ontario Line Exhibition station is completed, comes a close second.

I think renovating increasing BMO field capacity would be a better option than starting from scratch. That location is way better positioned than Downsview to support a 50k or even 60k audience.

Let Toronto get the WC right and let the soccer interest build over the next 1-3 years tho before any hasty decisions are made
