In the 90s, the planned had morphed to a more diagonal approach after Kennedy allowing for a potential grand station where the CP and CN lines cross.
and now we can't figure out how to even get a second N-S through there never mind add a subway under the river ;)

Last year’s consultation for the route to STC had a Brimley/Triton stop. Looks like this has already been cut?
I asked at one of the consultations, and they said that the station placements and names are placeholders for now, and a more in-depth station analysis will help decide what stations they recommend after an alignment is determined

Seems to be the first time we are seeing what stations are being considered?

Also - The city/metrolinx should really be talking to Northcrest about protecting for a station in central Downsview. Will be much cheaper to do it with this project than after the community is built up. Hangar district would be a good spot for a future Line 4 West extension going down Wilson.
This makes a lot of sense. I wish similar developments—like Cloverdale—were required to follow suit. Realistically, the natural western terminus for Line 4 is probably the provincial government complex at Keele and Wilson, and this would help move it in that direction.
I think Rogers Stadium will be long gone before Line 4 is extended to Sheppard West.
That said, we might just be looking at the future site of an NFL stadium—depending, of course, on how the next five years play out in terms of moving people in and out efficiently.

Personally, I think the long term vision for a western extension should be to terminate the line at the Pearson Transit Hub. See my map in the fantasy thread

Yeaaaa no.

I would much rather see it terminate at Sheppard West for the time being. Once you get west of Bathurst, the density drops and regardless Sheppard terminates at Weston Road.

The real value is heading east where everything is built up and the demand is. Even at Morningside and Sheppard there is demand for a subway while the area around Meadowvale is being built out. Markham and Sheppard has been built up for decades.

Not along Sheppard but rather heading south into central Downsview then either along a Wilson or 401 alignment to Pearson.

At the very least, central Downsview needs to have its own station given the size of the community planned.

A Sheppard subway could continue west of Weston Road and the Humber River into Etobicoke. It doesn't need to follow streets, but intersect with them with stations. Maybe straight to the Pearson Transit Hub or beyond into Brampton.

If the goal is to cross the Humber River - that's a lot easier to do if the subway swings to Wilson than if it stays on Sheppard.

On Sheppard, west of the Weston Rd intersection, it will face Humber River, with houses on both sides. Will need to either demolish those houses, or go into a very deep tunnel under the houses and the river.

If the subway swings to Wilson, then it can cross the river on the bridge next to the 401 structures.

The question is where to swing. I believe, between Dufferin and Keele is the most logical option. Alternatively, it is possible to follow Sheppard till Jane, and then use the Hwy 400 corridor to swing south.

The subway fills mostly from the connecting surface routes, not so much from the local density.

In the east, going to McCowan probably makes sense from the network perspective. I have no objections to that being the first priority.

But east of McCowan? very few feeder routes, and very light ridership to be expected. West of Dufferin, it can attract a lot more riders from the connecting routes: Keele, Jane, Weston, Islington, Albion, Kipling, Rexdale.

And Line 4 connecting to Pearson should capture a lot of employment trips at the airport, in addition to travelers. Line 5 will also connect to Pearson, but feeder routes from the north would be captured by Line 4 if it were extended and save a considerable amount of travel time.
