U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday demanded an apology from the Episcopal bishop of Washington after she made a direct appeal to him during a prayer service marking his inauguration to have mercy on the LGBTQ2S+ community and migrant workers who are in the United States illegally.
Referencing Trump’s belief that he was saved by God from assassination, the Right Rev. Mariann Budde said, “You have felt the providential hand of a loving God. In the name of our God, I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now.”
After he returned to the White House, Trump said, “I didn’t think it was a good service” and “they could do much better.” But later, in an overnight post on his social media site, he sharply criticized the “so-called Bishop” as a “Radical Left hard line Trump hater.”
“She brought her church into the World of politics in a very ungracious way. She was nasty in tone, and not compelling or smart,” said Trump, a Republican, adding that Budde didn’t mention that some migrants have come to the United States and killed people.
“Apart from her inappropriate statements, the service was a very boring and uninspiring one. She is not very good at her job!” Trump said. “She and her church owe the public an apology!”
A cathedral spokesperson did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment on Wednesday.
The Trump administration has already issued executive orders rolling back transgender rights and toughening immigration policies.
The Washington National Cathedral service was largely focused on national unity. Trump and Vice President JD Vance and their families attended, along with House Speaker Mike Johnson and Trump’s defense secretary nominee, Pete Hegseth.
In her sermon, Budde said they gathered “to pray for unity as a people and a nation — not for agreement, political or otherwise — but for the kind of unity that fosters community across diversity and division.”

I'm thinking that in Donald Trump's mind, he's thinking, "How dare this mere woman tell me what to do!"Trump demands an apology from bishop who asked him to ‘have mercy’ on LGBTQ2S+ people and migrants

"She served a long and illustrious career, and I thank her for her service," acting Department of Homeland Security (DHS) secretary Benjamine Huffman said in a message Tuesday to the Coast Guard.
But a senior official from the DHS -- which oversees the service -- was far more critical, saying Fagan was dismissed "because of her leadership deficiencies, operational failures, and inability to advance the strategic objectives of the US Coast Guard."
The admiral failed to address border security threats, mismanaged acquisitions, including helicopters, and put "excessive focus" on diversity, equity and inclusion programs, the official said on condition of anonymity.
There was also an "erosion of trust" in the Coast Guard due to its handling of an investigation into sexual assault allegations.
"The failure to adequately address the systemic issues exposed by this investigation has underscored a leadership culture unwilling to ensure accountability and transparency," the official added.
Review of senior officers
Trump and other Republicans have long railed against government programs aimed at fostering diversity, and border security is a key priority for the president, who declared a national emergency at the US frontier with Mexico on Monday, the first day of his new term.
Trump has had a contradictory relationship with America's armed forces, at times lauding their power but also claiming they were depleted and in need of rebuilding.
He has clashed with former top US military officer Mark Milley, with the retired general's portrait at the Pentagon removed on the same day that Trump was sworn in for his second term.
Pete Hegseth, Trump's as-yet-unconfirmed nominee to head the Defense Department, said last week that senior officers "will be reviewed based on meritocracy, standards, lethality and commitment to lawful orders," indicating that further dismissals are possible.
Fagan had led the Coast Guard since 2022, and previously held posts including vice commandant of the service.
She "served on all seven continents, from the snows of Ross Island, Antarctica to the heart of Africa, from Tokyo to Geneva, and in many ports along the way," according to an archived version of her biography, which is no longer available on the Coast Guard website.
We'll see how much of a Christian he is when the faithful turn on him, as they surely will. He's giving new meaning to hubris.Gad he's thin-skinned. I suspect he is a convenience Christian at best. It plays to part of his base.
Just like he rolled up in front of a church, the same church if I recall, bible in hand, for a photo-op during the George Floyd riots.

The guy went to an Anglican (Episcopalian) service and the homily reflected the Anglican POV. As an Anglican myself, it sounded spot on message. What did Trump expect? We'll see how much of a Christian he is when the faithful turn on him, as they surely will. He's giving new meaning to hubris.
He hates being challenged or called out. He is a typical bully. The guy went to an Anglican (Episcopalian) service and the homily reflected the Anglican POV. As an Anglican myself, it sounded spot on message. What did Trump expect?
I see the two new bros are already disagreeing. Trump does not generally react well to being argued with and I bet Musk will soon be sent to the penalty box!
"Shortly after President Donald Trump announced a new massive AI infrastructure investment from the White House, “First Buddy” Elon Musk tried to tear it down.
“They don’t actually have the money,” Musk wrote on his social media platform X. “SoftBank has well under $10B secured. I have that on good authority.”
Trump said the investment will create a new company, called Stargate, to grow artificial intelligence infrastructure in the United States. The leaders of SoftBank, OpenAI and Oracle stood alongside Trump during the announcement. Their respective companies will invest $100 billion in total for the project to start, with plans to pour up to $500 billion into Stargate in the coming years."
...
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt on Wednesday rebuffed Musk’s comments, saying in a Fox News interview, “the American people should take President Trump and those CEOs’ words for it.”
“President Trump is very excited about this infrastructure announcement in the field of AI, which is obviously growing, and something the United States of America needs to capitalize on, because our adversaries, such as China, are very advanced in this field,” Leavitt said. “So, the American people should take President Trump and those CEOs’ words for it -– these investments are coming to our great country, and American jobs are coming along with them.”
Altman replied directly to Musk’s claim on X, writing “wrong, as you surely know. want to come visit the first site already under way? this is great for the country. i realize what is great for the country isn’t always what’s optimal for your companies, but in your new role i hope you’ll mostly put (America) first.”
A source familiar with Stargate said Musk’s assertion is not true.
Never underestimate the Christian right's capacity for hypocrisy. We'll see how much of a Christian he is when the faithful turn on him, as they surely will. He's giving new meaning to hubris.
To be fair, when a high ranking member of the president's inner circle and richest man in the world is doing nazi salutes it's kind of hard to talk about that calmly.Ok.....can we get away from the above exchange please?
I'd be fine if any of the participants wanted to cut the theatrics/drama down and delve into the facts as supported by evidence, but since that's not the nature of the exchange its just taking up space where news or analysis might go.
Pretty sure Skydome is available...Trump US Gov investing up to $500B in new AI company called Stargate. I guess the Skynet name was taken already.
