30 years ago, Carl Sagan predicted what the United States would be like in the future.

"I have a foreboding of an America in my children's or grandchildren's time — when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness...”

The only part he got wrong - instead of crystals and horoscopes - clutching our phones and nervously consulting X.

They can't all be hypocrites can they ? I'm grasping a little here.
My aunt is one of them. She skipped visiting her elderly father this week to watch the inauguration. Always goes on about how she hopes people have Jesus in their life. She is a nice enough person, but the fact that she idolized Trump is utterly baffling me. A less Christian man has not been President in recent history.

What of this supposed $250 billion deficit? I assume most of that is oil. And if you add in all the services and goods Canadians buy from wholly-owned US subsidiaries operating in Canada, I’d expect to see that Canada is in deficit.

The thing is a trade deficit isn't like a government budget deficit if your country runs a deficit with another country all that means is that your country is purchasing more stuff from that country then that country is buying for you it's not like an actual case that a country is out more money as a result It just means goods are going more one way than the other

I'm not sure anybody knows where he gets that $250Bn number from. Interesting summary here, especially Chart 5

He tosses out the word 'subsidy', like the US subsidizes foreign industry. I'm not sure there is an economist who can look themselves in the mirror who would agree with his position. He's speaking to his base which will eat pretty much anything he says.

The thing is, I don't think it matters to any of his supporters within or outside of government if he is correct. He has said it, thus it must be true. Weird times

Absolutely. Just like this apparent river of pipeline or something that runs from the pacific northwest/Canada right down to Los Angeles but the mean Democratic governor won't open the tap.
I'm seeing that his supporters are dissing the Bishop because, we all know, immigrants are all rapists and murderers (after they eat all the dogs and cats I guess).

It's funny how so-called people of faith are condemning a faith leader for saying something faith-based in a faith setting.

Seeing as there is an amendment being proposed to let him serve another term after this, not entirely sure his acolytes don't believe it as well.

So... some of you may be familiar with some of the early, theatrical attempts at deporting illegals by U.S. military aircraft.

One to Mexico, the other two to Columbia were denied landing.

While some others did make it to their destinations in Guatemala and Brazil. The latter, however is an international incident, even though the landing was allowed.

Mr. Trump has now pronounced on Columbia's punishment for being defiant:

No word yet on what awaits Mexico.

As to the Brazilian incident:

Expect Colombian coffee to go up in price in USA. May go down for Canada. Ditto for Valentine's Day flowers.
