...it's not really "controversial" when they are ruling with an obvious white supremacist/racist narrative. And in doing so, twisting The Constitution and interpretation thereof in ways it was never intended (also see: moving goal posts). Instead it's the right side of history being scaled back by an entity with zero moral grounds currently. That's pretty black and white to me.
Leftists keep engaging in identity politics, it just gives more ammo for Trump administration. Like, I might respond to a post about climate change and the heat wave in Europe on Threads or some other social media platform, and an anti-Trump feminist will respond by complaining about my supposed lack of masculinity and tell me to cut my hair. The left just goes too far with identity sometimes, and it is no surprise when the right responds in kind. I've never had any MAGA complain my physical appearance and ridicule me based on my profile picture online, it's always the leftists.

Meanwhile, since we're reflecting on something...

Pretty big rulings from SCOTUS this morning all rebuking the administration

-States can count mail in ballots arriving late as long as they are postmarked prior to the election
-Won’t hear Trump’s E Jean Carroll appeal -Won’t hear Dersh’s CNN appeal - Trump can’t fire Lisa Cook
Whether the US falls into authoritarianism is going to come down to SCOTUS and Congress acting as a check on executive power. Congress has utterly failed to do so and SCOTUS seems to be wavering.

One lesson that some future government should take away from this term is the scope of Executive authority. It is historically ill-defined, other than it can neither make or override legislation. Some power is obviously going to rest with the Executive, but in some cases, Congress has devolved its authority to the Executive over the years, out of expediency or for whatever reason. It probably seemed safe, and made the government's reaction to quickly evolving events more responsive - until now.

Of course, much like reining in the power of the PMO up here, it will never happen.

You can see who they are going to go after next...

Which raises the question: where does the happy medium lie? Maintaining the integrity of the US Constitution and an Ammendment passed in the 1860s to ensure African-Americans are able to have full citizenship in the land of their birth. Whilst, on the other hand, preventing the abuse of a law for which it was never intended, i.e. birth tourism to circumvent immigration control.

To my mind, this is a bellwether issue on whether and how the US system can deal with political problems. Where does the balance lie between obvious Executive overreach and the more excitable commentators

Protracted institutional/political/social gridlock.

Obvious executive overreach and more excitable commentators...

...oh gee, that's a tough one! /s
