I know we're not monarchists here on UT, but I'd still like to see the King open Parliament in place of, or alongside his Governor General. It would be a good dig at Trump and strengthen transatlantic ties. Now is not the time for Canada to appear to be standing alone and proud, but instead to show that we have friends, family and historic ties in high places. And to HM's credit, the man is beginning to do his part for Canada.

I'd like to see Canada follow Jamaica and other former colonies and move to a republic model whilst staying in the commonwealth. But while we have a King, let's move him on the chessboard to Canada's advantage.

Moments ago, Mark Carney was sworn in as the 24th Prime Minister of Canada

Here's the full cabinet:

That reads to me as a demotion for Anand, also an odd ministerial choice for Freeland, biggest upward bump goes to Kamal Khera.

Same, which is surprising, since Anand was one of Carney's first big caucus endorsements.

Definitely a demotion for Freeland. Given her poor performance in the leadership race, maybe she's considering an exit from politics? I always figured she would end up leading an international org or think tank.

I've never quite understood the fanfare for Joly. I would have preferred Anand or LeBlanc for Foreign Affairs.

Also, this is David McGuinty's first time in cabinet, despite being one of the longest serving Liberal MPs.

If Freeland can get trade barriers down between the provinces she'll have done well. That's really holding back our national GDP.

With her ties to Trudeau's climate policies it may be unlikely, but maybe she can get pipelines from Alberta across other provinces to coastal waters.

It sounds like it for Freeland at first, though I would note if they win the next election and go through with the first phase of HSR plan for Toronto to Montreal that will be an enormous project and one of the most high risk as well. It will be up there in spending on new destroyers for the navy and fighter jets for the air force, but at the same time it will be far more visible. Regular people will see the plans and participate in consultations and then they will visibly see construction in progress, or lack of it, so tackling that at the very beginning is actually going to be a very important job... if they do go ahead with it, and she will wear whatever outcome happens, success or disaster.

Am I wrong for feeling this cabinet doesn't mean much with an election so close? If the Liberals win, I'd imagine Carney making more changes maybe? And if they lose, well, this cabinet really wouldn't mean all that much...

Since we're talking about Anand, I'm surprised to hear she walked back her decision to not run for re-election, allegedly. Can't get a pulse on if she'll retain her seat or not, as the Oakville riding was split into two recently (East and West, she is running for East). But the polls are neck-and-neck and I think the people on this side of Oakville are more blue than the other, so go figure.

I would think this is the next cabinet if they win, aside from any of these individual MP's that might lose their seats, it isn't changing.

Just to keep in mind that this wasn't like this about 3 months ago...

Strong disagree there. She's garnered the respect of our European counterparts recently and looking like one of the bright spots in the cabinet. Natively bilingual in English and French is also excellent for this moment.
True, she is improving. And I’ve had a crush on her since her Montreal days, so she can stay on.

What about keeping Joly in Foreign Affairs? She seems a lightweight to me.

This cabinet composition is only for a matter of weeks until after the election, where either Carney can appoint a longer term cabinet or PP will be PM.

I can’t see why anyone would vote for PP or even JS now. Canada’s in a trade war, we have an internationally-renowned banker as PM, who’s just axed the tax (as PP says) and will steady the ship. It’s very early days, but what could most potential CPC or NDP voters want that Carney doesn’t offer?

I think PP is clearly not the man of the hour, but about the same number of people think he is vs Carney. Hopefully Carney's honeymoon lasts through the election and the LPC at least achieves a minority. It could be a majority, as it sounds like the NDP are heading for oblivion.
