Hey, I used to live in Rockcliffe, too. Doesn't mean anything! 😋

I'm wondering where he would run. It would be pointless for him to run in Ottawa-Vanier or Toronto Centre. I wonder if he runs in Edmonton.

This is just a temporary replacement for JT resigning before his term ended and there'll still be an election in the coming months, right?
There must be an election in Oct 2025. It's part of the Canada Elections Act, Section 56.1, which establishes fixed election dates.

Specifically, it states that a general election must be held on the third Monday in October in the fourth calendar year following the previous general election—unless it is called earlier.

The smart move, given her tendency toward betrayal, but that'll be difficult. She's almost family to Carney. She's likely to get something like: Housing/Infrastructure; National Defence; or Health.
Arguably she did the country and her Party a great service in helping to dislodge Trudeau.

That's likely her POV as well, though I expect her motivation was to replace Trudeau as LPC leader and PM, and she would have had Carney kept his nose out of things, she may think.

Trouble is, once in Cabinet, does Freeland begin to think she'd be doing the country and her Party another solid by dislodging Trudeau's replacement? If Carney has anything like an Ignatieff misstep she may be loosening her scabbard once more.

Once one has politically assassinated the party leader and ones boss, can you just switch it off and return to being a trusted subordinate?

‘Donald Trump loathes Chrystia Freeland.' She would be a good candidate for Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Joly's definitely going to get tossed from Foreign Affairs. But if Carney's smart he'll keep Freeland away from anything related to Trump. So no foreign affairs, trade or commerce.

Give Freeland Defence, which if we're to meet and exceed our 2% goal (CAD $56 billion) will be one of the largest expenses of the federal government. It will need sold management, and Freeland's got that. She's also good for collaborating with Europe and Ukraine on the war and growing defence cooperation with Europe. As for Joly, send her down to the Minister of Citizens’ Services or something where she can do little harm.

It's time for a fresh face for Canada at the desk facing Trump.

So where is Carney going to run from to be an MP?
I know he could technically pick anywhere, but does anyone know where is his actual residence right now? Is he living in Toronto or Ottawa?
Where he actually lives is largely irrelevant for someone who is party leader and will likely be either PM or Leader or His Majesty's Loyal Opposition. He will live in Ottawa and have precious little time to represent the constituents.

Carney is actually from Fort Smith NWT and the Liberal incumbent there Michael McLeod has announced he is not seeking re-election

He was born in Fort Smith, however afaik he hasn't spent that much time there. He mostly grew up in Edmonton.

Yes, but there's always an uproar about "he's not even from here!", even if it technically doesn't matter.

I'm sure he wants to run for a seat that is both safe and authentic.

Certainly plenty of allusions to Edmonton in his winning speech. I bet he goes on the offensive there. Dude's an Oilers fan.

It's Toronto Centre, how many people are truly "from here"?

Me.
  • Marco Mendicino: The MP for Eglinton—Lawrence and former Minister of Public Safety announced on January 2, 2025, that he would not seek re-election.
Not really a fan of him being announced as chief of staff for his transition team, but I guess it is exactly that, a transition team.
