Openings
  • Kommune Snack Bar, a Scandinavian-influenced eatery, opens on March 21 at 11931 Jasper Avenue. Chef Christine Sandford provided consulting support.
  • Boba + Brew opened last week, serving bubble tea and specialty coffee, located at 4962A 98 Avenue.
Closures
  • What a loss: after a decade, Lock Stock Coffee announced its closure. Its final day will be March 21. Thankfully, Red Star will continue on with its regular hours.
  • Ashford House Pub in Manchester Square announced their closure back in February.
Ashford House isn't a great loss. It was hit or miss.

Had an early Downtown Dining Week lunch at Sharon Yeo's favorite haunt, Rosewood Foods.
Now I can see why she loves this place so much!
Liked their Pho Burger, and the cappuccino went down nicely.

What's in the Pho burger? Because that sounds interesting!

I had a chance to check out Kommune Snack Bar (in the old Ikki Izakaya space). Lovely space, great staff, and a really killer menu. The Smoked Meat Schnitzel is a must-try, as are the potato cake and the grasshopper pie! Official opening is this Friday. Great addition to the west end of Jasper Ave.

My Downtown Dining Week adventure took me to Pazzo Pazzo. I got there just before the Oilers game started, so there were only a couple of occupied tables. The caesar salad was OK, the seafood fettucine was delicious although I needed a takeout bag, the tiramisu was good and the red wine went down fine. Raul's a friendly and capable server. The aired Italian music's enjoyable although I could do without the hip-hop and that woman yelling out her tune.

Overall I'd go back, although there are other local Italian restaurants that I'd rather frequent more.

Vines Riverbed wine merchants are closing their doors in Oct. 20 years and one of the best scotch and whiskey selections in the city. Lease is up and they figure its better just to close.
Crestwood fine wines has opened in the space, slightly reduced in size to get rid of the tasting table, which was a big use of space for pretty niche usage. So happy to see something open in this spot.

Probably not new to most of the downtown dwellers/workers, but I really enjoyed the eggplant and cheddar baguette at Cavern. I was also thrilled to see that they stock le Riopelle de l'Isle!

So, now that we have more daylight than not, the days are getting warmer, the geese are getting angrier, has anyone noticed any signs of patios returning yet? Apart from the usual suspects (eg Rocky Mountain Ice House, Cask and Barrel, Cafe Bicyclette, Next Act). Bonus points if it's not directly facing a stroad...
