Missed it at the start of the year:

Edmontonians list the restaurants they'll miss in 2025

Chicken for Lunch

One of the earliest and toughest goodbyes for many posters was, after more than 30 years of operation, Chicken For Lunch, which was located in the Rice Howard Place food court. Chicken For Lunch announced its closure this past February.

Biera

The end of 2024 also marked the end of Biera and its accompanying Blind Enthusiasm Market Brewery at the Ritchie Market (9570 76 Ave.) after a seven-year run.

Shōjō Izakaya

Shōjō Izakaya, located at 10425 121 St. under Wilfred’s in the Brewery District, closed its doors in October, but locals say they will still miss the eatery in 2025.

Dalla Tavola Zenari

Dalla, which was located at 10166 100A Ave. in Enbridge Centre, held its final day of service on New Year’s Eve.

Northern Chicken

The second chicken locale on the list was around comparatively shorter, having opened just over seven years ago, but in its time garnered a strong reputation for some of the best fried chicken in the city.

NongBu

NongBu Korean Eatery closed in the fall of 2024 after serving Edmontonians for roughly a decade.

Gravy

Gravy Burgers and Fries, located at 10933 120 St., closed its doors for the last time in April 2024.

Take 5

Take 5 was a North Edmonton staple for doughnuts, coffee, and deli options for several decades, but shut its doors permanently in September.

Malt and Mortar

Perhaps known best for its large, sunny, summer patio, Malt and Mortar shut its doors in 2024, but its space will be used by a moving Whyte Avenue neighbour.

I would add Sushi Niwa to the list - although they are supposed to come back. This place single-handedly kept me sane while working Downtown.

A large percentage of restaurants that had their business disrupted by COVID are now gone -- North America wide -- from my own tally, somewhere around 15%+ causing a new crop to take a stab at "former" spaces. We can miss the old that didn't make it but we should be heralding the new as well!

Yes, even more turn over in an industry that has generally had a lot of turn over. However, it seems like a number of established and well regarded places closed largely due to the disruption of COVID.

There are a number of interesting new ones starting up too that may become the well regarded and established places of the future.

Hit up Koutouki last night on 124st. We were a bit early going 530-630, but there were only a handful of tables in the joint.

Service excellent, food very good (although I prefer basic design on the salad) and I always like the cute interior.

It reminded me that that spot is a great place to gather with 10-12 friends at one of their long table areas.

Tried El Jardin again last night, hadn't been there in a while. Was pretty busy, right before the Jelly Roll concert. Took advantage of their $35, 3-course Downtown Dining Week special. Great value, had a tapenade and chips starter that was great, Carne Asada tacos (your choice of tacos) beef was tender and overall tasty, and pina colada ice cream desert. Would recommend checking it out, was happy with meal. Space doesn't have the character of Rostizado's but service was friendly and good. Music was way too loud but I'm getting old.

Paris Baguette on Whyte for the first time today. Loved the self-serve section, amazing cakes, perfect croissant and many products that took me back to bakeries in Tokyo.

Continuing my quest for the best divy dinner. Finally made it to Donnas Dinner in Winterbourne. Very good food and huge portions. Will go back and try some of the lunch fare but had breakfast items. Omelette was large ad quite full. I had the fried egg sandwich and again ended up using a fork because it was large. Don't know what the rice came to since the owner compt us.

Also hit up Hansen's Distillery for drinks Sat night. always pleasant to sit and relax with an Old Fashioned and chat. And thanks to the couple that covered our bill. Made for a very good weekend.

So far the best Dive Dinner is Country Cookn on 156st.

Went to the Harvest Room at the Hotel Mac last night to take advantage of Downtown Dining Week. I've never had trout before but it was quite good. The mushroom soup was exquisite, the chocolate cake was delicious, and the wine (Tormaresca Trenangeli Rosso) left me relaxed. The service was impeccable, and the view of the river valley was magnificent.

speaking of food, as old as I am I've never heard of, let alone seen or tasted a fatayer. (its a type of cheese filled pita). A friend put me onto sunbaked pita bakery on 134ave. delicious! they have lots of offerings. very tasty and easy on the wallet.
Sunbaked is so good. When I worked closer we'd go there for Shawarma all the time there.

Miss it.
