It's interesting to see Air Canada starting to dabble ever so slightly in sun flights from YEG. First Cancun a few years ago and now Montego Bay. Never hurts to keep Westjet honest on that front.
It’s worth mentioning that not all of those connecting passengers are from Prairie cities (although the lion’s share probably are). I once met a Californian in Italy who connected through Calgary on WestJet to get a better airfare deal. YYC will likely get more foreign connecting passengers when they launch their Abu Dhabi (west coast passengers) and Sao Paulo (Japan-Brazil) routes.Just to put it on the table so there is no more dispute ever again about YYC’s numbers and how they relate to YEG’s……
YYC’s total traffic included 34.4% connecting traffic numbers in 2024. So, 18.9M X 34.4% =12.34 M Without YEG’er and other prairie cities filling up their planes…..so they're only 4M more than YEG….not10M as others might like to think……mic drop!
They may get some foreign connecting, but somehow I feel Vancouver passengers may be much more reluctant and assertive about having to connect there than we are. Also there are other airlines that may not force them to do so.It’s worth mentioning that not all of those connecting passengers are from Prairie cities (although the lion’s share probably are). Fire sales/fares…..someone’s gotta pay the $300M price tag per plus YYC’s monthly interest payments on their new terminal of $50M/monthly…..It’s worth mentioning that not all of those connecting passengers are from Prairie cities (although the lion’s share probably are). A much smaller number and percentage but would need to remove YEG connecting passengers to fairly compare.Just to put it on the table so there is no more dispute ever again about YYC’s numbers and how they relate to YEG’s……

Thinking of our potential round 2 matchup in SLC, wouldn't it be better to have daily year round Delta Connection CRJ/E175 to SLC vs the seasonal few times a week WJ 737? Frequency matters.![]()
Edmonton travel agencies betting on Oilers fans to increase in U.S. bookings
Playoff hockey is back, and for some fans it’s an excuse for a vacation to catch an away game. But with travel agencies continuing to see a decline in Canadians visiting the United States, they are betting on sports superfans to buck the trend. There are a lot more international connecting passengers these days due to some of the recent overseas routes. Both times coming back from Seoul to Calgary, almost all of passengers on the flight were either Koreans or Chinese. Koreans coming to visit Canada or the US, Canadian-Koreans coming home and connecting off somewhere. For some reason both times there a lot of Chinese passengers. On one flight it was delayed while they waited for a sizable group of Chinese travellers. It’s worth mentioning that not all of those connecting passengers are from Prairie cities (although the lion’s share probably are). All hub type airports do large volumes of connecting passengers, it's typically the case when you're a hub in the the hub and spoke system.Just to put it on the table so there is no more dispute ever again about YYC’s numbers and how they relate to YEG’s……
