That may be true...But this confirms that the YEG market is low yielding and proves to the airline that it's not worth setting up service.

On the flip side, the number of Edmonton residents that drive to YYC is large and I don't know if YEG does any research to estimate that number. But again, airlines want high fare paying passengers not the types that are driving to Calgary.

As much as I would like to see the Edmonton International Airport be just as busy and just as important as the Calgary International Airport I think we have to be realistic and understand that Calgary will have a higher priority from the airlines for international flights. I don't want to see a loss of international flights through Edmonton but perhaps one thing that could be a further focus for Edmonton is focusing on all regional flights which would also include Vancouver Regina and Saskatoon. And then when it comes to traveling between Edmonton and Calgary this is where the airlines can partner with a high-speed train that people can travel on while the airlines focus on their longer haul flights.

I know several years ago during my 7-12 school years, if I remember correctly it was either Edmonton Journal/ CTV Edmonton that did news story about the estimated people driving past Edmonton YEG to Calgary YYC to catch a flight ✈️.
Although that article is no longer available .

Yes some drive to Calgary to work, school, leisurely travel activities/ to attend Sports events or Concerts. Or to Banff , Canmore & into BC .

Edmonton YEG - Vancouver YVR - YEG up 8/9 daily flights year round from both Air Canada & WestJet & Flair flying it up to 2-4 daily.flights. Not too bad

YEG -Saskatoon YXE - YEG /Regina YQR - YEG 2x daily on WestJet - 4 daily both directions which is limited .

Although Edmonton currently does have pretty good 👍year round bus 🚌 service on Rider Express & Flixbus- as Edmonton is the main connecting point for long distance bus into Saskatchewan/ Manitoba for all bus travelers in Western Canada 🇨🇦 !!

We are already a fairly busy regional airport, so that is not the problem. We are very under served internationally, for a city our size. I really don't see a high speed trail happening for 10, 20 years or possibly longer.

By that time our city will also be bigger so hopefully as we grow we will get more and better flights overall, not just regional ones. We shouldn't limit ourselves and settle for less.

This is the right assessment. I think the decades of hand-wringing about YEGs viability feels overblown and a bit sky-is-falling. Calibrate expectations appropriately, particularly factoring in the impact of YYC, and just enjoy the slow, but steady growth to come. I can only see things getting better as Canada becomes more internationally focused in trade (Asia + Europe) and looks to grow it's military in both enlisted members and domestic production. Putting on my futurist hat, I could see a scenario where Carney seeking to get better leverage out of the privatization of ports and airports also opens up Canadian airspace to international investment and competition, which may see underserved markets like Edmonton suddenly become opportunities for other carriers.

This is UA’s 3 X weekly seasonal only right? Do we still have WJ’s? They change their mind every hour so it’s hard to keep track
Summer seasonal currently, UA Edmonton YEG - Chicago ORD- YEG operates 2x weekly Wednesdays & Saturdays from May 30 - September 5 in S26.
Yes Last summer it was 3x weekly .

WestJet doesn’t operate YEG -ORD - YEG route as it was one of WestJet flight cuts for S26 season to the US & last year they did 2x weekly.
YYC - ORD- YYC is WestJet’s year round out of Fortress Hub which is 1 daily in summer/ few times weekly in Winter.
