Not sure if City of Edmonton hired the landscaping contractor (Wilco) or if it was PCL, but disappointing that with city tax dollars we have to hire a Calgary company for this significant work.

Also, it looks like there will be fencing in this park - but not to worry, I think most will find it ok.

Those fences were in the renderings, so I'm glad the city is following through with them. They'll help save the naturalized plantings from getting trampled!

Wilco or Classic are the BIG 2 - Wilco - from what I've seen does great work - half of their work is probably in the Capital region anyway....no different than PCL having a YYC office when their HQ is YEG....this I'm ok with!

Doesnt look like Wilco has an Edmonton office - at least not on website. Just two in Sask with HQ in YYC.

I don't think that you're right:

Wilco Contractors Northwest Inc. is one of four individually owned and operated companies which comprise the Wilco Group of Companies established over the last three decades.

Wilco Contractors Northwest Inc.

Leaders in Open Space Site Development
Edmonton / Ft. McMurray / Okanagan

Wilco Contractors Southwest Inc.

Leaders in Civil and Landscape Construction
Calgary / Saskatoon / Regina

Wilco Landscape West Coast Inc.

Leaders in Civil and Landscape Construction
GVRD – Vancouver Island

Wilco Contractors Superior Inc.

Leaders in Civil and Landscape Construction
Thunder Bay

Looks great. Classy. Definitely not campy so why have fire pits? It's two conflicting designs and there's no need to be sending smoke over the park to choke people that are sensitive to smoke. It would really be something if the smoke drafts into the pavilion and smokes out the Parks Department.

I understand you won't change your mind, but just think for a second why we have this cliche of a dark alleyway. It's become a stereotypical place for crime and other illicit undertakings to occur, not just because its dark and late out but because it's an isolated and uninviting space with few people nearby to hear or see anything. Fencing up public spaces and urging people not to go outside after dark is not a solution to crime, just a way to make the overall problem worse.

More on topic - this park looks very good early on, I got a look at it during my lunch break and was pleasantly surprised. The light feature feels a bit imposing from street level but that will change as the surrounding area becomes more developed, I'm excited to see what it looks like in the winter. Those aerial shots of the landscaping look amazing, I'm sure we'll have our gripes with features missing from the final product later on but this is truly an excellent addition for Downtown.
Don't get me wrong. I'd like the freedom to come and go wherever and whenever I pleased. So would everybody. But that's not the way things are now. There is security all over the place. Nobody can hop on an airplane without going through security. Public building have security. The new Parks apartment has security doors before entry is permitted. So why shouldn't the park have a form of security to prevent people from doing whatever and whenever they pleased. Constance believes in laissez-fare access to the park but I'm guessing that she would have something to say if her place of residence didn't have some security and anybody could just walk in whenever and do whatever they pleased.

I am still trying to understand your crusade against the fire pits... The way you talk about them it makes me thing you believe we'll have 4 large-scale coal furnaces blowing heavy smoke 24/7 in the park.

You know what? You've convinced me. In fact, I'd go one step further: there should be a fence around the whole park and no gate. That way, we can be sure that no nefarious activity is happening there.

Smoke is an irritant to people with respiratory challenges such as asthma for one thing. Another is that the ashes left from a fire are messy and will need to be cleaned up by parks staff because nobody who starts a fire will wait until it goes out to clean up the ashes. It's possible that the pits will burn natural gas which would be cleaner than firewood but natural gas is an operating expenditure too. So the budget reason given for cutting out a water feature was bogus imho. Is it possible that fire pits were selected over a water feature because they're a better thematic fit with the renaming of the community?
