Fair enough but the last thing you want is failed infrastructure and major replacement the month before the World Cup.
Sure. It would really suck if our water system failed in May or June for example.

But I'm not sure what fretting about the minuscule potential of a major infrastructure outage is going to achieve other than increasing your post count. (And yes, I see the irony of that statement.)

CP24 says it's underground issues, but CBC says it's overhead issues. Both cite the TTC as their source.

...so which is it?

TTC working to repair damaged cables to restore streetcar service on Spadina Avenue

February 24, 2026

510 Spadina streetcars have been temporarily replaced with buses while crews replace damaged underground power cables that supply electricity to the overhead streetcar wires along Spadina Ave. Shuttle buses are operating between Spadina Station and Queens Quay, serving curbside stops to maintain service for customers, and additional staff are on hand at Spadina and Union stations, as well as the Queens Quay transfer point, to assist with wayfinding and transfers. Extra streetcar service has been added along the waterfront between Union Station and Queens Quay.

The damage was identified with reports of a cable chamber fire on the afternoon of Monday, Feb. 23. Repairs require the replacement of 640 metres of underground electrical cables running from Adelaide to Queen St. through multiple cable chambers along the Spadina corridor. Due to the location of the infrastructure, the work is complex and must be completed in confined underground spaces, requiring careful coordination, safety controls, and staged access to multiple chambers.

The cable replacement work is being carried out by contractor forces, supported by TTC staff. Work began overnight on Feb. 23 and is continuing around the clock. At this time, the repair is expected to be completed by the end of the week, though bus replacement service will remain in place until all testing is complete and the infrastructure is confirmed safe for streetcar operations.

The TTC is committed to keeping customers informed about work and events that impact service, as well as alternate route options. For the most up-to-date information, follow @TTCNotices on X or sign up for eAlerts.

TTC service changes coming March 2 to accommodate College Street and Bay Street construction

February 25, 2026

Starting Mon., Mar. 2, the TTC will be adjusting service to accommodate the renewal of aging streetcar tracks and overhead upgrades at the College St. and Bay St. intersection.

This work will impact the 506/306 Carlton streetcar and the 19 Bay bus as follows:

• 506 and 306 Carlton streetcars will divert both ways onto Dundas St. between McCaul St. and Parliament St.
• A 506B and 306B Carlton replacement bus will be introduced, operating between Spadina Station and Broadview Ave. and Gerrard St. E.
o Eastbound buses will operate via Spadina Ave., College St., University Ave., Gerrard St. W., Yonge St., Carlton St., Parliament St. and Gerrard St. E.
o Westbound buses will operate via Gerrard St. E., Parliament St., Carlton St., Yonge St., Wellesley St. W., Queen's Park Cres. W., College St. and Spadina Ave.
• 19 Bay northbound buses will divert onto Yonge St., between Gerrard St. E and Wellesley St. E.
• 19 Bay southbound buses will divert onto Queen’s Park Cres. W. and University Ave., between Wellesley St. E. and Gerrard St. E.

Wheel-Trans service will remain accessible in all areas where local traffic is permitted.

These service changes will be in effect starting Mon. Mar. 2, but won’t appear in most TTC and third-party trip-planning applications until March 15.

The diversions are expected to continue until May 2026. Full details of the service adjustments are available at https://www.ttc.ca/service-advisories.

Additional diversions will be required when work resumes for Phases 2 and 3 after the FIFA World Cup 2026™. TTC will communicate these changes at a later date.

Sometimes I wish they would install tracks down Bay from College to King for diversion purposes..

I need to get this off my chest...

Everytime there's snow/ice, the TTC arbitrarily diverts 42 buses via Leslie-Finch-Bayview. For the second time this year on grocery runs, I've had to stop at Ruddington and Pineway as a good samaritan to let passengers know they have to walk to Bayview or Leslie respectively. I have a good soul, and can't stand seeing people waiting for a bus that'll never show up.

I must've helped two dozen people today.

This could all be avoided with next bus displays, or having a Wheel-Trans vehicle with studded tires shuttling passengers back and forth between Leslie and Bayview.

It's sad that it has to come down to the sympathy of a good samaritan.

Peace.

You'll want to suggest that prior to the rebuild Bay & Dundas. IIRC Retrac intersection design life is 30 years, they order special work at least a year out and the last rebuild was in 2007.

I wonder what

I wonder what decade will every line run with no diversions, will we live to see the day?

TTC continuing work to restore streetcar service along Spadina Ave.

Feb. 25, 2026

Work to replace damaged underground power cables that supply electricity to the overhead streetcar wires along Spadina Ave. is progressing, and the TTC remains on track to complete repairs by the end of the week.

On Mon., Feb. 23, the damage was identified with reports of a cable chamber fire, and repair work began overnight and continued around the clock. All 640 metres of damaged underground electrical cables are expected to be replaced by end of the day today, Wed., Feb. 25. The cables run from Adelaide to Queen St. through multiple cable chambers along the Spadina corridor. Once cable replacement is complete, the TTC will use the next few days to restore connections, do testing, and confirm that the infrastructure is safe for streetcar operations.

Replacement 510 Spadina buses are operating between Spadina Station and Queen’s Quay to maintain service for customers, and additional staff are on hand at Spadina and Union stations, as well as the Queen’s Quay transfer point, to assist with wayfinding and transfers. Extra streetcar service has been added along the waterfront between Union Station and Queen’s Quay.

The cable replacement work is being carried out by contractor forces, with TTC staff supporting the remainder of the work necessary to restore streetcar service. Bus replacement service will remain in place until all testing is complete.

Don't know if this has been posted anywhere or not, if it has, my apologies.

The City has launched a survey ahead of the next tendered contract for street furniture. (ie, Bus shelters, waste receptacles and benches).

That could fit in many threads, but as transit stops/shelters are the lead component, I'll park it here.

The survey seeks your opinion on how well existing designs work (durable, clean, safe etc) and what enhancements, if any, you would prioritize (more of what?, what do you want to add most to stops, etc.)

They generally only allow 2 priority asks in each segment.

They also ask about tolerance for advertising.

Survey link:

Closes March 26, 2026.

****

My input:

- Next bus/streetcar times should be at every stop, no exceptions.

- Yes to more full shelters; canopy shelters are a last-resort, better-than-nothing but provide relatively little protection.

- Every stop should have lighting, both outside (on sidewalk) and in -shelter where applicable.

Or simply use Church ..., is there a curve missing that precludes it's use for a 506 diversion?
The West to South curves at Carlton are missing, and I’m pretty sure they are one of the several missing curves that were approved to be added in when their intersections came up to be rebuilt, but were forgotten about when the work was done.
