The Toronto Zoo has got their SRT car:
Cool. Meanwhile, 5707 hasn't been seen at its usual location for over a week 😞 Hopefully it's just being used for a film shoot and will be back eventually.

TTC Subway Car Contract Goes to Alstom

Despite the premise of an open, competitive bid among potential carbuilders for new subway trains, various politicians have openly argued that the work should go to the historical provider, the Alstom (formerly Bombardier) plant in Thunder Bay.
On August 15, all three funding governments, Canada, Ontario and Toronto announced that a sole-source contract will be awarded to Alstom Transport Canada. This is intended to support Canadian jobs and an existing manufacturing facility. All bidders have been notified that the former bid process has been cancelled.

Seems pragmatic enough. With the increasing stress to buy Canadian, and the merger of Alston and Bombardier, we all know they'd have won. And perhaps with a higher bid than desired.

I get the feeling a few people on here won’t be happy, but given all that’s going on, I’m glad they will be made here. Other countries like France and the US prioritize building in their own country.

A rather busy, relatively narrow, spot during PM rush-hour.

It's interesting you say that as I've always wondered about that space.
The curb lane on College, and that whole block of College between bay and Yonge has unusually wide lines.
I've never figured out why, but I guess it is historical to get people on and off streetcars from when the area was a huge destination, back when College Park was the big Eaton's store and Maple Leaf Gardens was in its prime; a near daily destination for possibly tens of thousands of people before the subway was built.
I'm guessing there used to be a streetcar boarding island there eastbound? Anyone know?

504 King replacement buses to resume service through Church intersection on Monday

Aug. 15, 2025

Beginning Monday, Aug. 18, 504C and 504D/304D King replacement buses will resume service through the King St. E and Church St. intersection, as City of Toronto watermain replacement and TTC track renewal construction wrap up.

As of Aug. 18, 504C King replacement buses will operate along King St. between Bathurst St. and the Distillery. 504D/304D King replacement buses will operate along King St. between Bathurst St. and Gerrard St. and Broadview Ave.

Streetcars will continue to divert around the King and Church intersection as follows:

• Westbound 504 streetcars: From Queen St. E., south on Church St., west on Richmond St., north on York St., west on Queen St. W. south on Shaw St, west on King St. W. to regular routing

• Eastbound 504 streetcars: From King St. W., north on Shaw St., east on Queen St. W., south on York St., east on Adelaide St., north on Church St. and east on Queen St. E.

• Westbound 503/303 & 304 streetcars: From Queen St. E., south on Church St., west on Richmond St., north on York St., west on Queen St. W. south on Spadina Ave., west on King St. W. to regular routing

• Eastbound 503/303 & 304 streetcars: From King St. W., north on Spadina Ave., east on Queen St. W., south on York St., east on Adelaide St., north on Church St. and east on Queen St. E.

Customers can remain on a 504/304 King or 503/303 Kingston Rd streetcar, which will divert as noted above or board a 304D, 504C or 504D King replacement bus.

Wheel-Trans service will remain accessible in all areas where local traffic is permitted.

The TTC will be testing and commissioning the newly installed streetcar tracks over the next few weeks and will provide an update on the resumption of streetcar service at a later date.

Full details of the service adjustments are available at ttc.ca/KingChurch. Customers are also encouraged to follow @TTCNotices on X or sign up for eAlerts.

Hopefully this repair work at King & Church will actually hold up. You know, longer than a few years.

I have no idea why the city just didnt just deal with the utility issues and fully replace all the watermains, instead of relining them to extend their service life. Now if there happens to be a major issue, we'll be right back at square one and we'll have to deal with the mess again.

Saving this below for future reference in case the city wants to scrub this information from their website:

At least it is not like Metrolinx's Line 6 Finch West LRT. Years behind... allegedly. The TTC will be running test streetcars through King & Church intersection tracks for a few days, and then open a few days later. Not years later.

Just to clarify: while Alstom was chosen as the sole supplier, the contract hasn't actually been awarded yet, at least not until after negotiations are completed "over the next few months"?

Alstom SA is owned 17.5% by Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec. I would assume that parts would mostly be made in Canada, with some parts coming from Europe.

Another day another biohazard 🤮

That's gross. But did the person that took the photo report it?

The TTC moves lots of people each day. They aren't all perfect riders. Heck, I transported my young, vomiting son on a streetcar years ago (with a plastic bag to contain the mess).

We all want perfection. That won't happen. I ride the TTC daily, and I've never seen this.

And yes, I'd like more help/treatment/whatever for those that are using the TTC as a mobile shelter. Calling it a cesspool all the time doesn't help.
