Hopefully this repair work at King & Church will actually hold up. You know, longer than a few years.

I have no idea why the city just didnt just deal with the utility issues and fully replace all the watermains, instead of relining them to extend their service life. Now if there happens to be a major issue, we'll be right back at square one and we'll have to deal with the mess again.

At least it is not like Metrolinx's Line 6 Finch West LRT. Years behind... allegedly. The TTC will be running test streetcars through King & Church intersection tracks for a few days, and then open a few days later. Not years later.
 

TTC Subway Car Contract Goes to Alstom

Despite the premise of an open, competitive bid among potential carbuilders for new subway trains, various politicians have openly argued that the work should go to the historical provider, the Alstom (formerly Bombardier) plant in Thunder Bay.
On August 15, all three funding governments, Canada, Ontario and Toronto announced that a sole-source contract will be awarded to Alstom Transport Canada. This is intended to support Canadian jobs and an existing manufacturing facility. All bidders have been notified that the former bid process has been cancelled.
Just to clarify: while Alstom was chosen as the sole supplier, the contract hasn't actually been awarded yet, at least not until after negotiations are completed "over the next few months"?
 
Alstom SA is owned 17.5% by Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec. I would assume that parts would mostly be made in Canada, with some parts coming from Europe.

The TTC moves lots of people each day. They aren't all perfect riders. Heck, I transported my young, vomiting son on a streetcar years ago (with a plastic bag to contain the mess).

We all want perfection. That won't happen. I ride the TTC daily, and I've never seen this.

And yes, I'd like more help/treatment/whatever for those that are using the TTC as a mobile shelter. Calling it a cesspool all the time doesn't help.

Honestly I agree with everything you said above! Everything is stacked against them and they’re the place of last resort for a lot of forgotten people.

Relining water mains and sewers is a common practice and is usually achieved by inserting a pipe of slightly smaller diameter inside the old pipe. It allows repairs to be made faster if the pipes are surrounded by other utilities.

I don't know the method on this project, but in my experience Toronto Water has been big on CIPP (Cured in Place Pipe) in recent years.

I THINK that this is only used for sewer pipes - in fact they did exactly this on our street last year. I think water pipes are done with the 'shove in a new section of pipe method" but others undoubtedly know more than I do!

I've taken this several times over the last three years during the CNE. They make it very clear with repeated announcements (almost to the point of being annoying) before the bus doors close and it leaves that it's a non-stop CNE Express bus and it will not be making any stops and going express all the way to the Dufferin Gates.

Yet every single time I've time I've taken it, at least one person wants to get off and frantically tries to get the driver's attention when the bus keeps going.
Yesterday a guy was actually pulling and shaking the doors to try to force them open. I get that some people don't have English as their first language (he had an eastern European accent), but he could obviously understand enough of it to be angrily yelling "CNE? F#ck CNE!" and "No, I call police about YOU!" at the driver.

Edit: I know there's not much space for it at Dufferin and Bloor, but I suppose it might help eliminate the apparent confusion, among those few who don't listen or understand the announcements, if the CNE Express buses boarded at a more clearly defined spot separated from the regular 29 and 929 buses.
It finally happened. I was on a non-stop CNE Express bus that made it all the way. It was less than half full, and four people had to get off just before it left when the TTC guy loudly yelled to everyone that it was non-stop, but no one rang the bell or wanted to get off before it got there.

What route number do they use? It used to be something unique for that bus route.

So they were originally supposed to come in 2026, and then it got cancelled, and then this has been announced, but not awarded....so when can we expect these if the contract does end up awarded this year?

Hopefully starting in 2029/2030. Basically same timeline as the TRs (contract awarded 2006, delivery began 2010) + 20 years.
