I don't think people will confuse TMU station with Dundas West or St. Patrick. My argument is that, if they are not familiar with said acronym, they will have no idea what it refers to. Now, again, you can use Google Maps to find out, but you can also use it to differentiate between Dundas and Dundas West (not to mention engaging in step by step trip planning that precludes any possibility of one ending up at the wrong station to begin with), so any argument in favour of TMU as a name inherently validates Dundas and Dundas West, too. And so we go around in circles again, why did they need to rename the station in the first place?

Using an acronym is incredibly inconsistent with the TTC's pre-existing station naming guidelines. And for what reason? The cost savings of not having to print such large station signs must be trivial. I can't see a single compelling argument for why the name must be abbreviated. They're pointlessly complicating it for no reason, whereas utilizing the full name would ensure maximum understandability for all.
Toronto Metro University, Metro University, Metropolitan University.
Ignoring the whole reason behind the renaming, the proper way could have been, "Dundas-TMU".
But since the university is paying, it'll be either TMU or Toronto Metropolitan University.

If the city is really all in for the Sankofa name, "Sankofa Square-TMU"

That's not a terrible idea if the goal is to have Sankofa name stick and become more commonly used quicker.

It seems like Sheppard Yonge station construction has been paused. The concrete was poured over a month ago and the crane truck hasn't moved in at least two weeks.

They keep the escalator to the bus area running even though it's closed. They must have money to waste on electricity. If it's to keep the parts from seizing one hour a day would be sufficient.

Over a year and the station is still closed. What a disaster. I guess this is what happens when the lowest bidder wins.

As a Condo Manager, I never take the lowest bid.

The issue is that with the lowest bid comes alot of risk. Usually there is a ton of stuff not included to bring the cost down.

At some point the things that weren't part of the lowest bid become necessary and are tacked on at higher price.

This could include anything from firm timelines to things like inspection costs.

More often than not if you read the bids, it's more cost effective to go with the higher bid.

If I'm not mistaken for these government projects it's a lowest tender wins rule. Unless they are disqualified.

I don't care if its TMU station or Eaton Centre Station or even Shoppers Drug Mart station. I'm just happy It wasn't named Sankofa station. Which has zero connection to the area, either geographically or historically, and the name which comes from an African language used by the biggest slaver tribe in a country of Ghana. Who just passed a law last year to jail ANYONE who is LGBTQ+.! I can't see “Sankofa Square” lasting long. The square will be remand again in the near future (hopefully) What a waste of tax dollars it was renaming the square in the first place.

I never liked the name Sankofa to begin with, and even less now. In fact, this should be enough to boycott the name entirely, especially considering that the name Dundas is being boycotted for similar reasons to begin with (and also why Ryerson became TMU).

If I had an employee who insisted on using the wrong spelling, I would terminate them.
And if you lived in the US, would you terminate them if they refused to use the MM/DD/YY format? Because if you would, that says more about you than them.

(yes, I acknowledge US spelling over Canadian, but don't acknowledge the Imperial system, and don't acknowledge MM/DD/YY either)

I find it disrespectful that someone would choose to police my language.

So 'Sankofa' isn't a brand of coffee paying to get its name there?
Close.

Could have been worse - they could have called it Starbucks Square
