Just thought it was interesting how they decided to stack all the furniture up against the park side of the building, completely blocking the view in for anyone under 2m tall from the park, while preserving the view in for drivers sitting in traffic on Jarvis. They’ve done this for the past few weeks so it’s not a one-off.

So they built a market knowing from the get go that it would be used to host farmers' markets with removable tables and they didn't think to build storage into the floor plan? Seriously? This building just keeps on outing the incompetence and not-giving-a-shit-ness culture at City Hall.

There is storage for the tables and the coolers - I assume it is still not ready for use or they are still working out the logistics of putting out and taking in the equipment. The aim is that the North Market can be rented out on the 6 days of the week when it's not a farmers' market.

This is not the final plan for the furniture and if one is worried about visibility, I would say there are MANY more pedestrians walking on Jarvis than through the sad and dark remnants of Market Lane Park.

That's a relief to hear. Do you have any more information about what's outstanding?

I finally had a chance to go there in person and I could see what everyone here and on social media were talking about. Hoards of of people were jaywalking across Front, even with a crosswalk 30 feet away.

Another issue I noticed was that the main door was congested. It was not designed for that volume of people flowing from the North Market to/from the South Market on busy market days. The garage doors from the park will help in the summer but that access point was not sufficiently considered.

The cafe door would've helped in the future if it were connected to the main hall, but they've effectively isolated it from the market. This really needed at least 4 doorways spread across the front like was in the original plans. And too late for this, but there should've been an underground connection to offset at least some of the pedestrian flow to/from the South Market.

I do not have details of what has still to be finished.
I doubt that a coffee shop owner would want their space to be a passageway and would want to be separated from the Market space - which will often be empty and closed.
An underground link was discussed, at length, but was apparently impossible due to a trunk sewer under Front Street. There are also 'garage doors' on the Jarvis Street side and, in summer, they too will be open.

I think just propping open one of the 3 doors you have to go through to enter the main market would go a long way to alleviate the traffic jam at the entrance. It's very awkward to move through.

That would do it but it only works in warmer months. The garage doors on both sides will resolve congestion during those months anyway.

People jaywalking from the south market pile up into groups of 30 or more as they wait to cross and then all of them funnel into the doors in the centre, which is made worse by those exiting the north market. The original plan had people going in from not just the centre but each wing had their own doors. The building was originally designed to be very porous but that was all thrown out with the cheapening.

Nice ladder. :(
...I feel sorry for the bloke who has to put that up there. He's likely doing a professional enough job given the circumstances. But this City is doing the unprofessional thing here by saving every bean at the detriment of what should of been an iconic go to for the public. /sigh
