Just got back from checking it out, some thoughts:
  • Generally the space feels good: not too loud/echoey, aisles are wider, despite the rainy morning it feels bright and airy. Can't wait to see it in the sun.
  • Too much drywall, and it looks ... not great, especially at the top. Was it left unfinished?
  • I was worried that people would throw garbage into the wide space around the pillars, but they're open at the bottom and act as bumpers.
  • The North end by the long meat counter was pretty crowded, but generally speaking the flow of people seemed good. People seem to like hanging out in the open space in front of the main doors, which could get problematic.
  • It's not immediately clear where the side entrance doors are.
  • They need to do something to repel pigeons, the exterior I-beams are perfect roosting/nesting spaces. The ground around the bike parking space on the western side is already covered in shit, enticing exactly nobody to lock up their bikes there.
  • Being able to see all the action inside while out on the street is fantastic.
People were excited to be there, especially the vendors!

Elevators and 2nd floor closed to public. Back stairs not accessible. Green P not open yet.
We only waited 9 scored plus years, 3 Prime Ministers, 2 Monarchs and 3 Presidents for this day, why would we be expecting everything up and running... /s

A friend actually said to me yesterday “watch, some plumbing will mess up and there’ll be a flood.”

Cuz as Torontonians, we have these kind of expectations

Just checked it out. It’s absolutely packed in there! First impression was it’s weird to have to go through 3 sets of doors to enter from front street.

Yeah I noticed that too. That’s a lot of door to go through with accessibility devices

Fabulous! Despite being an overcast day the interior was well-lit and the colours looked great. And perfect dimensions. Can’t wait for the side doors to open it up to the outside and then circulation won’t be an issue. But know that I have seen the two markets working together I am thinking that the parking lot on The Esplanade needs to incorporate a ground level space/market/venue to keep the vibe going as there is so much potential here! And more grocery stores.

Finally I felt such an incredible urban buzz in the entire area and with Wellington East rebuilt it reminded me of being in central London.

What's with the blank walls and a single door? Is this an unoccupied space awaiting a tenant? You'd think they'd install glass walls for maximum natural light into the offices on these floors.

Looks like the desire path is being established. If the city doesn't recognize this and create a sort of pedestrian scramble or set the traffic light back to create a direct crosswalk from one St Lawrence Market to the other, then it's a matter of time before someone gets hurt. Inexplicable lack of foresight in not digging an underground connection in the decade it took to build this.

^This is a soft opening as you pointed out there is some work left to do such as the event space on the second floor and café on the southwest corner at ground level. And the city did have police directing pedestrians so they may be waiting to see what happens on non-market days before permanent fixes go up.

Great to see the new place so busy! Nice pop of orange on a grey day I must say!
Looking up the architecture does remind me a little of a visit to Alcatraz prison a few years ago! lol
