Also, what is the reasoning that it would be impossible? Doesn't make sense to me
The thread I shared above will tell you but I‘ll break it down here. Further questions should probably be asked on that thread.

The city is prioritizing housing. Squeezing housing and a 30’000sqft library onto this tiny lot is not impossible but it would prove expensive. Adding residential elevators, stairwells, trash chutes, etc. eats up the library floor space and stretches it vertically. It’s complex and expensive. The city can deliver more housing for less money by focusing on simpler developments.

I can’t speak to the demand for the library but I imagine it will eventually find a suitable home that is larger than the 125 Esplanade lot. If it’s delayed long enough maybe it will land back on part of the first parliament site.

Thanks! Yeah I read through the thread. Ten years and it goes right back to the original slot... lol.

So the parking lot, planned to be a park, turned into a market tent, then a planned library and now maybe planned residential. Nice spin.
So back to the question.

What will it be in May after the tent is removed?
A park
B parking lot
C fenced off area
D concrete picnic area
E tent won’t be removed

Question 2
How long (in years) to break ground for anything. 4x4 post holes don’t count.

I think a library and/or community centre would still be nice on the site, especially since it's not common that we get a free-standing site for an institution in this city without adjacent wall-to-wall properties.

A library at the Espalanade site would effectively serve as both a visual terminus and community destination at the west end of the Esplanade parks, and could also draw in more foot traffic south from Front Street.

In contrast, my expectations are that a rental tower will not make the site any more vibrant than it is at the moment, especially considering the footprint and expected facade space dedicated to building services (utilities, garbage, loading, maybe even parking).

The last I heard was that (if the library plans are truly dead) the City will leave the tent there for several months (they own it) but it will be relocated at some point - maybe to be used as another homeless drop-in like the one @ Lake Shore and Parliament? The area is then likely to be turned over to CreateTO as a housing site. How long all this will take is, of course, not easy to say!

The new north market ground floor and south old market temporary tent could be prime emergency shelters locations. Except on Saturday and Sundays and between 9-5 weekdays.

Unless someone else finds a more permanent use for them.

For good or bad.

No.

The North Building is a functional building with presumably high traffic. It would be problematic to balance the two.

The temporary tent would be the perfect space however.

Metro Hall is used on extreme cold or hot days.

I hope the north market ground floor fish bowl has a good purpose during the week but it is totally separated from the courts except for I assume common air (possible noise and smells). I agree it is not a good mix but we shall see.

I asked in the Library thread (https://urbantoronto.ca/forum/threads/new-st-lawrence-library-city-of-toronto-s.33485/page-4) for it to be pinned. Hopefully it happens so the discussion can move over there.

Presumably the pre-work for Market lane Park?

No worries, I’m sure they will tender out a mural for indigenous art and congratulate each other for it at the ribbon cutting because that’s far easier than returning land or meaningful change.
