I also do wonder if the people who live on the south side will drive north on Cherry, to get off the island, or get in the habit of taking Unwin to Leslie. I’ve kinda been surprised with the day time traffic on Cherry this last week, mixed in with industrial. And that’s without an event at Rebel/Cabana

A good question. It's shocking that we intend on building such dense neighbourhoods without building rapid transit from the beginning. Streetcars, even in right of ways, just aren't that good in this city in terms of moving people quickly and efficiently. We're creating conditions that are in some ways reminiscent of Victorian times--high density without the public services that make density livable.

Sadly, the Waterfront East LRT is not fully funded yet. The city has committed "some" funding but a lot more is needed. I think it's going to cost $2.5'ish billion. The Province and Feds need to step in to help with funding, for sure.

I've posted in this and predecessor threads repeatedly that the density proposed here does not make sense without subway/commuter rail directly in the neighbourhood. Distances of ~1km to East Habour, or Corktown are not appropriate to service the potential demand, particularly if one wants a transit-centric, pedestrian-oriented community.

We're so far down the rabbit hold of badly planned here it baffles the mind.

While I like the new team the City have hired to re-think the vision here, I don't think they can reconcile the desired density and the proffered type of transit.

The WELRT, even fully built out (ie. running up Broadview to East Harbour) is not sufficient to serve the proposed density. The capacity and travel speed are too low.

The phase 1 build out also excludes the connection to East Harbour.

Yah, it's Phase 2 and Phase 3 that will involve Ookwemin Minising. Phase 1 is almost exclusively setting up Union Station for the connection. Which needs to happen first, of course. So, 2040? 🙃

Given the way the city has worked, for my 51 years of life, I suspect they plan to have the Ontario Line do most of the heavy lifting and just have quick (and cheap) transit connecting to the stations. I keep having this gut feeling that all we are going to get in the short term is "increasing bus frequency to help with the increased density".

They have clearly never ridden some of these shorter transit bus routes downtown, especially during rush hour. Packed (practically) every single moment of the day (I'm looking at you Parliament). 🙃

I was telling my son we're going to go down there, so I pulled up for him some of the pictures of this place just a few years ago. Apparently I took him down to watch the action in March 2022... Old Cherry and Commissioners looked like a moonscape back then.

That's the Polson Quay District and the South River District. There is an old document from 2015 about the vision of the port lands where they talked about those two with some examples. I'm not sure if the plans have changed (much). I guess these are not part of Ookwemin Minising so it's off-topic. Apologies in advance.

"South River: A scenic location for media and creative uses with the new mouth of the Don to the north, the Don Greenway to the east, and the Ship Channel to the south. Housed in multi-storeyed buildings with active uses at street level, over time the area will transition to be a distinct mixed-use community that ensures the continued viability of the Lafarge Polson Street terminal and port operations to the south."

Weird for them to say the area is reserved for creative media uses but to then show two almost exclusively residential neighbourhoods as a precedent.

What's more likely? More soundstage sheds and some residential off to the side?

Wow just visited and biking around the area and I had this incredible feeling like something great is happening for the Port Lands. Even imagining what keating channel/development along the shipping channel could be turned into. The future is looking bright! Biidaasige park was fantastic. Packed.

Nah, what @DSCToronto linked. There is a planned media district, called Media City, east of Ookwemin and south of the McCleary District. Pinewood Studios is already in that district.

This is also an old image so it may have changed a bit but you'll get the idea...

Speaking of the Waterfront East LRT, when CBC was filming last Friday in Ookwemin Minising, they appear to have discussed it a little bit and just posted a snippit of it...
