It's pretty incredible what man can do when he bends nature to his will.
Ahem, there where a few shes involved with this project too...

I cycle there often (and walk there occasionally) and must say I have never seen a cyclist/pedestrian conflict - certainly not a volume of pedestrians (or cyclists) that would warrant police enforcement - you must have been there in some sort of rush hour or tour group. This yield to pedestrians sign came to mind when I was walking on the island yesterday. I stood here for nearly two minutes because none of the 50+ cyclists would stop to let pedestrians pass. I even tried to step out several times and none of them even attempted to stop. *sigh*
The police really need to start patrolling this area and handing out fines, especially on the weekends. Not to mention the dozen cyclists on the sidewalk (expecting pedestrians to get out of their way).

Last I checked, ALL vehicles, including bikes are supposed to yield to pedestrians, so no, cyclists do not have the moral high ground in all cases. They should let pedestrians cross & they most certainly shouldn't be on the sidewalk.
My girlfriend said it's the opposite of what they've done to Ontario Place.
This is only the case where it says bikes are to yield to pedestrians. There are several areas where pedestrians cross the Martin Goodman Trail downtown (Harbourfront Centre/Music Garden area) where cyclists are instructed to WATCH for pedestrians, but not yield. However, there aren't signs for pedestrians to yield for bikes either. They should really put more signage to make it more clear for everyone what's going on because there are pedestrians crossing and and walking on the trail without any clue what's going on.
I must admit that I sometimes cycle (carefully) on the east sidewalk of Cherry Street between Commissioners and Lake Shore. I do so because if one is going further north on Cherry you have to cross Cherry twice (once @ north side of Commissioners and then again just north of Lake Shore. The Cherry bike tracks north of Lake Shore are non bi-directional. Of courseIt's often busy on weekend evenings, especially on Saturdays between 5-8pm. And yep, there was an event that was happening just over the bridge on the island and lots of people were leaving the event. By the time I was able to pass, there were at least 7 of us standing there waiting to walk across the bike lane. There were even a couple of cyclists taking that corner at such speed, that they almost collided with cyclists going the opposite direction.
I could not believe my eyes. Next time it happens, I'll record video of it. It was something to see.
Side note: Last summer, I had a wave of at least a dozen cyclists blow past me at high speed on the sidewalk while I was walking down Cherry Street, back towards the city. The sidewalk on the opposite side of the street (where there is no bike lane). Cyclists go down that sidewalk all the time instead of simply crossing the street and using the bike lane.
I even had a guy fly into a rage, screaming at me, back in April when I simply mentioned "You know there is a bike lane on the other side of the street, right?". Imagine every vulgar obscenity you can think of, for almost 2 full minutes while I walked away. Even at close to 100 meters away, he was still screaming at me. He was yelling about no community here until 2036, blah, blah, blah.
I ended up contacting the city, the councilor for the area, and talked to a police officer about the altercation.

Of course->) I would never swear at pedestrians if I were trespassing on their territory but I fear others in the cycling fraternity are not as well mannered. (I was surprised that they did not put a LEGAL bike lane northbound, on that block of Cherry but they didn't.)
You appear to be a 'bike magnet' - I walk a lot (and bike) and have never run into a pedestrian (except one who was taking a selfie and stepped back right into the bike lane). I DID swear a lot that day. When they put these bike lanes in on Ookwemin, the first thing that popped into my head was "Why not put a bike lane, each way, on both sides of the street?". They certainly have more than enough room for it, so there is not any harm in it. I actually fear for the cyclists if they hit me. After decades of sports, I tend to plant my feet. The last time a cyclist collided with me, he went flying over the front of his bike, right over me.
I could be wrong but I think were a few years from thisWondering when the first building will be officially started? Perhaps in here somewhere?
