Finally- someone is talking about the practicality of these names. Fully support choosing Indigenous names, however there are major issues of functionality and accessibility (many folks aren’t able to pronounce or read them). Statistically, most Indigenous people are monolingual English speakers!This was interesting… apparently the name isn’t usable in Canada Post or Revenue service computers. So they’re suggesting another name for those purposes, which kinda begs the question…

Every other language transliterates words from other languages/alphabets into their own. Why can’t we do this? It fixes all of these issues.
Also: Minising means “island”. This should be called Ookwemin Island because most people will be calling it Ookwemin Minising Island or Ookwemin Island Island![]()
