The hovercraft link is planned between Toronto and Port Weller in St Catherines. Not the USA, or NOTL.

YES, but it has its own thread. This discussion should be there as it is nothing to do with Lower Don Lands.

Some news!

Alex and I have had our disagreements on this space, but I couldn't be happier to share his enthusiasm for the the team being hired to re-think it.

SLA and Allies + Morrison is about as good a power couple as you could ask for here.

Now....we can't prematurely express enthusiasm for an unknown outcome............but these are people who have a track record I trust, one that inspires........

So this is not just good news, it's potentially GREAT news.

Go read Alex's article.......but let's take a moment to laud Jason Thorne for his first very clear stamp on City Planning and Chris Glaisek from Waterfront Toronto who has consistently shown design ambition (even if it hasn't always been realized, you know he cares about it...........and it shows)...

Here are some of those iffy curbs I was talking about. They don’t look so menacing, and maybe it’s me riding a bike share e-bike and it's considerable weight. Dunno if you get that kind of dirt collection if it was a smooth transition.

This was… interesting. Unsure why they would have tore this up. It’s not a machine is it?

And hey, fence is open. Pretty sure it’s still trespassing…

I obey signs.

This bridge is being built by Waterfront Toronto which while partly funded by the city, is a different entity. They've already delivered a number of projects from the 3 bridges to this island, the Queens Quay rebuild and the Wave Decks.

I'd suggest that an appropriate comparison would be to dig up rendering and documents that were presented when those projects were conceived and to compare them to what was delivered.
They have a dedicated page for this bridge on the Waterfront Toronto website as well. Under their "Quick Facts" the bridge is "anticipated" to be complete in 2026. It's apparently called the "Equinox Bridge".

I’m seriously getting impatient though, waiting on plans to get floated for the silo grounds. We’ve got a slip, we’ve got a pedestrian bridge, and we’re opening some park spaces- so what’s the hold up here? Did they earmark it for cultural space and it’s not the climate for any of the institutions to pony up? Do the federal libs have funding in place but know it would be anathema to announce an artsy project in Toronto prior to the election?

Sure we’re waiting on QQ to be straightened which likely has something to do with the eastern streetcar line etc etc. but still we can still plan for lots, no?

This is the problem with how disjointed all the Toronto projects are and where the information is actually located. You can find bits of info on Waterfront Toronto's website, but then other bits on CreateTO's website, and even more on the City of Toronto Website.

I totally understand your impatience. There are a whole bunch of moving parts that most people are not aware of for this entire area.

Quayside Street Realignment needs to be done before then can zone for Quayside AND before the Waterfront East LRT Extension (Segment 3) can be started. Luckily, they are still working Segment 1, I believe. Also, Segment 3 involves the street car route on Ookwemin Minising as well and connect to the King Streetcar route. This will give the island a direct street car connection to Union Station through the East LRT Extension.

However, there is also the Don River and Central Waterfront Stormwater Project. The "Inner Harbour West Tunnel" is also being built along this LRT route. This Stormwater Project is directly related to but also adjacent to Ookwemin Minising's new waterway.

It's a huge mess of information, all in different locations. *BIG SIGH*

I know it is not easy to find things on UT (the search function sucks and Google is best way!) but there were lots of posts on this new bridge on this thread, in mid-May A few pages back..

You might want to follow Waterfront Toronto on YouTube as well. They release videos showing the progress of the Island work. They have some great aerial footage in their videos.

The latest video was from late March 2025

This video was posted on May 1, in this thread. It is great to see new UTers posting and discussing but best to check that if/when you post links they have not been recently posted (at least in the same thread).

Weird. I literally tried to search for it lol. Sorry.

The biggest impediment at the moment appears to be the gas plant.

As per Matt Elliott via City Hall Watcher, the gas plant has hired lobbyists to advocate for its continued operation (paywall).

This is going to be an interesting situation, considering that the East Harbour Development and the McCleary District Development are on the horizon as well.

Also, a transit hub is planned with the Ontario Line Station, connected with a East Harbour GO Transit Station AND a streetcar line from that East Harbour station planned to service those two developments.

On top of all that, I do remember plans to further expand the movie and tv district in that area as well.

This is going to have a domino affect if that lobby group gets their way.

Indeed, City building always involves discussions and compromises between residential areas, industrial areas and parks etc. Most people want to live near their work but if 'your work' is a gas plant I suspect your neighbours (whose work is in an office) would prefer YOU to have to travel a long way to your (polluting) workplace.
