If you are referring to signal priority and bringing speeds up to normal levels when opening that will likely take months if not years... no point holding our breath for that. Rather have the line open and then MTO/City/Metrolinx/TTC and other partners figure out the speed.

If thats the logic, might as well wait for the EG W LRT Extension to be ready and have even a faster "crosstown". Only 4-5 years to go for that or at least they say.
Agreed - others can use the line 5 shuttle if they want faster speeds...

Otherwise, RSD is done. Substantial Completion is done. Open it up. I hate how the TTC and Metrolinx are using the cloud of unknown problems to delay opening further.
 

Speaking of Cedarvale, I am trying to figure this one out:

The new Line 5 entrance out to Eglinton West and Everden (the sole south side entrance) has three fare gates to enter/exit. Two are widened accessible wheelchair logoed gates. It's absolutely crucial to have such accessible gates in place to allow for accessibility devices and people in general. BUT this gate leads to an exit which is strictly stair-access only. In fact it's one of the more onerous staircases on the system, with 4.5 flights of stairs. I am no fitness paragon, but I am gassed when I climb these. There is absolutely no way anyone could get up or down these stairs with a mobility device.

I don't understand the motivation for having the accessible gates. While it might seem to be harmless to have them, and maybe it just fit the space better, some accessibility-needing users might take these gates to mean they should use them to exit the station. They will be in for a surprise. I do note there is an elevator on the paid side of the gates, which doesn't lead to the Eglinton/Everden exit but to a mezzanine level where you have to find another elevator to get up to a north side exit.

Also, it seems they are starting to put clear panels on the garbage receptacles. Most of the ones in the station when it opened just had the bags loose and open to passersby which was pretty ugly and cheap looking.

Lastly, no photo, because I'm not a jerk, but shout out to the Santa-bearded TTC staffer who is stationed in the new underground fare booth. Dude has absolutely nothing to do. I wave at him as he sits with his feet propped up, staring into space. I'm sure he's earned it. But may he have more passengers to assist soon!

It's quite damning that people are now suggesting it'll be faster to get to Mt. Dennis from Scarborough by riding line 2 to Dundas West and then take the UP from Bloor GO. Probably even quicker once the tunnel connecting Dundas W. with Bloor GO is complete.
As it stands now, it's also faster for people on the northern section of Line 1 Yonge to get to Kennedy by getting on Line 2 at Bloor-Yonge.

A. Transfer at Yonge-Eglinton: 5 minutes for transfer, 37 minutes on Line 5
B. Transfer at Bloor-Yonge: 9 more minutes on Line 1, 5 minutes for transfer, 23 minutes on Line 2
 
Steve Munro reports that there are rumours of issues in the underground section of Line 5 with tracks and signals, meaning that there will likely be slow zones during operation.

If there are serious issues with underground tracks and signals, how the f*** did the third party "independent engineers [verify] the line is ready for service"???

The whole point of an up to 14 day long substantial completion certification period was to make sure everything was right. Instead, less than 4 days after RSD completion on the evening of December 1st, they announced substantial completion on the morning of December 5th. It seems Metrolinx rammed through a rubber stamp substantial completion for political reasons, in pursuit of a December 28th opening.

"To achieve Substantial Completion, extensive testing was conducted to ensure the line is prepared for safe and reliable service. This testing included:

  • Running the line at full capacity in a variety of weather conditions, including 10 centimetres of snowfall
  • Operating the fleet more than 11,000 kilometres per week to replicate customer service
  • Maintaining service for 16 hours per day
  • Ensuring a full complement of staff to proactively manage and mitigate any problems that arise during testing"

December 28th was pushed by Metrolinx CEO Michael Lindsay, but the
TTC CEO Mandeep Lali pushed back. "Sources said he wanted to see the line open around Feb. 8, citing concerns about rushing fixes to the remaining technical problems. The meeting appeared to end with Ford accepting Toronto’s position the line could not be opened this year."

It's crazy how demonized some of us were for having the audacity to say that Eglinton (and Sheppard East) should have been a subway and that they cooked the numbers (Neptis) to make sure LRT won over subway while excluding Skytrain/OL technology from the studies.

How the table have turned today - looks like this line will have the same issues as O-Train.

A subway wont have better reliability. There will be just as many issues with the Ontario Line. Its simply how crap everything is built today in North America

Yeah, we’ve never seen slow zones in the subway, schedule bloat, lineups at terminals, operational problems, lines that never get built, etc. Such a transit paradise.
