No points for guessing why..................but in case you haven't had enough coffee to start your day, I'll make it obvious w/this close-up:

So......that used to be an intact tree root from the tree in the concrete planter adjacent. Looking at the thickness, they ripped off a good chunk of it. If you're going to do that, you might as well remove the tree, that's pretty damaging. It may survive, but it's certainly in jeopardy now. Besides, those concrete boxes are an awful way to have planted here, this would have been a good chance to correct that, and place them in the ground.

just plant new trees in the new streetscape

90 Mill Street is completely clear of fencing.

Very little progress on that second laneway...

And they have flattened out the dug up area along Cherry Street, laid dirt down, and reset the interlocking bricks. I guess they are done digging (for now) and plan to finish the sidewalk, finally?

New Federal Housing Minister apparently stopped in for a site visit last-week while he was in Toronto.

Well, that essentially confirms that the affordable units are still going in. I'm curious if the amount of units is still the same (if sometimes changes before a build completes).
R-GFA is usually the same, but the mix of bedrooms is sometimes adjusted for specific program preferences (eg. more 2+ bedroom units).

Am I understanding correctly from the photos that the new public street to the south of this site is going to sit next to the existing (albeit re-paved) laneway running along the back of the Mill Street buildings? It seems like an inelegant solution if so...

I think it will be one street with (maybe) a sidewalk on south side. They have already paved (first coat) the north side and are currently excavating the south side (where the former lane was.) To maintain garage access to the Mill St buildings they could not do both sides at same time.
