Bike balancing really seems particularly poor recently. Far too many docks with zero working bikes or zero free docks. There was a complete absence of bikes in King/River area yesterday morning.
My partner tried biking from University & Richmond last night and there were no bikes available on University between Queen to King. Eight empty docks on Richmond, Adelaide, and King.

I scrolled back and I don't think anyone posted this RFP that was issued on April 23rd:

Description
Toronto Parking Authority (TPA) is seeking qualified proponents to conduct a Bike Share Toronto PRESTO Integration Study. The study will help evaluate the feasibility of integrating Bike Share Toronto’s payment technology with the PRESTO fare system – unlocking the potential for fare integration between public transit and shared micromobility in Toronto.

Expansion appears to be ramping up again, finally.

A series of new docks installed in/around Humber River Regional Hospital:

One just to the east as well:

That brings us to 880 Docks.

Of course, docks without bikes don't so much............. which reminds me............how are we doing with that bike shortage up at York U?

Hmmm, core campus, 6 docks, 0 bikes..........

Lets be generous shall we.........lets look at the expanded area:

11 docks, 0 bikes.

Ok then.

In this whole massive area out of 35 stations only four (!!!!!) have bikes available right now:

This is actually insane. I tried complaining on Twitter, we'll see if that leads anywhere.

Not a new problem, sadly, I've been highlighting it for over a year. Its resulting in significantly lower ridership than potential, and has to be adversely affecting financial results for organization.

Their customer service is generally useless on such things.

I'm not sure whose replacing Justin Hanna over at Bikeshare.........(he just left) ....

My suggestion......point this out to Scott Collier, the President of the Toronto Parking Authority.

I think part of is that that a lot of the bike fleet is not in service. This area is particularly bad, but Bike Share claims to have over 9,000 bikes and the current number around 4am from a few days this week, when nearly all bikes are going to be docked or re-balanced by employees, is just under 7000. 2000 more bikes isn't going to solve the availability problem but maybe that many not in circulation is making the problem a lot worse.

Entirely possible. But people need to push for an explanation/resolution.

That's why I keep putting contact info out for everyone.

I can't put my name on everything......

Giving people who reposition free rides or some other reward might encourage people to reposition a bike instead of paying a transit fare...

I agreed. I feel like we already discussed this earlier in the thread, perhaps multiple times 😂.

Okay, when I have free time I think might as well try writing an e-mail. I will update here if I hear back.

Great! Thanks.

Just include that image you made, or one of the ones I extracted, and note that this is not a one-off but an ongoing issue for at least a year.

How would you make this work without giving select people in select areas effectively free memberships?

Who cares if membership is free for some people? If the cost of paying a bunch of staff to drive around in trucks costs more than these memberships, then it's worth it. They can change the criteria of how many bikes you have to move on a yearly basis if they determine they are giving away too many memberships. Or they could make it that you can only accumulate enough credit to partially, but not totally offset your membership fee.

New York's CitiBike program Bike Angels offers points for moving bikes from crowded stations to empty ones, which can be accumulated and redeemed for certain things like making future rides free, and there are restrictions and conditions on gaming the system. I think I've read about another similar program where certain stations are highlighted as being eligible for rewards.

There's a big problem with stations near or north of Bloor emptying by 9am daily, with people riding downhill into downtown and then not riding uphill home. Sometimes the stations near me barely replenish by the evening. Giving incentives for people to ride home, or ride somewhere mid-day could help.
