The WMD lie will be his lasting legacy. That and shooting his friend's face off.

Say what you will but he is still one of the last great statesmen in the US.

Looking back, he had potential and probably could have run for president without Haliburton and his health issues.

He came from the era of Reagan, Bush and Ford and performed well on 9/11.

After Bush left office, you had Biden, Pence, Harris and Vance who were not really all that qualified despite Biden winning the presidency.

Overall, I do think history will reflect well on Cheney

History will reflect well on one of the architects of the war in terror, patriot act, WMD lies etc? Huh?

On what basis would you crown him with such a title? I can't think of any nation or group who thought he was particularly diplomatic or visionary, at least in a good way.

He came from the era of Reagan, Bush and Ford and performed well on 9/11.

You mean he started two disastrous wars that accomplished nothing but killed millions (literally) and returned many a member of the U.S. military in bodybags to their families.

Overall, I do think history will reflect well on Cheney

That makes one of us.

I agree he did lock the US into Iraq although my point was more directed towards his handling of 9/11 and his actions in comparison with his successors.

He may not have been perfect but he was more qualified than the people who came after him.

Exactly.

I don't understand how you can separate the US response and handling of 9/11 from the Iraq War. The US government directly linked Saddam to Al Qaeda as part of the justification. Cheney was clearly integral to this entire process.
In the minds of many people, the Iraq War forever taints the Bush administration's response to 9/11 and the goodwill it generated among their allies.

What? Cheney will probably be remembered for unprosecuted war crimes, though Trump may eclipse him in that regard.

Looks like the reality that Mamdani will win tonight as Mayor of NYC is making him melt down even more!

Imagine a world where the US stuck to only Afghanistan and didn't get exhausted with Iraq. They would have had a lot more resources for Afghanistan leading to a much better outcome there. They would have had trillions less in national debt. We wouldn't have seen the rise of ISIS and destabilization of the Levant. And they would have a lot more global support and leverage over Iran when they were only across one border. They would have also been better positioned to counter China today.

Iraq is the gift that keeps on giving....strategic setbacks to the US.

He may not have been perfect but he was more qualified than the people who came after him.

Nah. Biden was definitely a better VP.

Bush blew up both the Middle East, and the global economy. Cheney was his right hand man throughout, though probably more influential on the Middle East than the economy.

Like Kirk, he was a horrible person who did and said horrible things. And should not be put on any podium or pedestal outside of example where history went wrong, IMO.
