Was it a "I'm sorry that this happened" kind of apology, or a "I'm sorry that you were offended" kind of apology?
NO, that doesn't cut it. Carney should have defended the ad—it was 100% factual, there was NOTHING wrong with this ad, which used Ronald Reagan's own words. "The Gipper" was the ORIGINAL free trader. He signed the first FREE-TRADE pact with Canada. Reagan didn't "love" tariffs as Trump claims. Carney's sickening groveling to Trump was disgusting and indefensible. How pathetic that a Canadian PM would be cowed in such a way by Donald Trump. We need Jean Chrétien back again!

Just think about what Carney has done with this apology. He’s conceded Trump’s position that Reagan 'loved tariffs'—ergo, Trump’s tariffs on Canada, up to 50% (or is it 60% now?), are a 'good thing.' Talk about giving away your negotiating position. Carney should have been arguing that any tariff on Canada by the United States is never a good thing, and tariffs threaten the legacy of "The Great Ronald Reagan". 'Idiot' doesn't begin to describe Mark Carney.

Canadian's need to stop making excuses for Carney's abject failure to get Trump to drop all tariffs on Canada. There are ways to make Trump do that. We don't have to settle for Trump poaching the few manufacturing jobs we have left in this country. We are in the game! There are many things that we can do but are not doing to save Canada from the destruction of our economy and eventually our country. The one thing Mark Carney did get right was when he said, "Trump wants to break us so he can own us". How come Carney is doing NOTHING to stop Trump?

I don't know how others feel, but I find it disgusting that Carney would apologize to Trump
I feel glad that we have grown-up adults like Carney in charge of our diplomacy instead of people like you. Throwing tantrums and stumping feet over non-issues doesn't get you anywhere. And a Reagan ad is not the hill to die on. Moreover, its target audience was the conservative electorate, not Trump. All the benefits that the ad could have brought have already been realized. So yes, now is the time to "apologize" to the orange man-baby and move on with the trade negotiations. Luckily, the adults in charge of our country realize that sometimes they have to say things they don't mean in order to keep things moving in the right direction.

Diplomacy, what diplomacy? Diplomacy is dead under Trump. Unless you are a powerful country like China, Trump will slap you around if you don't try to fight back. Canada is not without cards. We are America's biggest customer - we could inflict pain on Americans if Carney were not so spineless. American farmers can't exist without our potash. There are no other good alternatives. Had we put 100% EXPORT tariffs on potash after Trump slapped tariffs on Canada, we would not be in the position that we are in right now.

It should be obvious to everyone by now that Trump is in no hurry to settle his trade war with Canada. Why would Trump want to settle when each week another auto plant shuts down in Canada, coinciding with new announcements of new plants in the United States? Trump's plan is working just as he intended, as Carney crawls up in a ball and sucks his thumb.

...besides, apologizing that it offended is different from say it was wrong. And sometimes in that taking the higher ground makes a bigger fool of the person it offended.

Meanwhile, back in the *real* world, Trump hosts a Gatsby cosplay event at Mar-a-Lago, while millions of Americans are getting kicked off of SNAP...

Nope, it isn't. Carney revealed himself as a spineless, gutless, COWARD!

I'm not entirely sure it would have made much of a difference either way had Millhouse won the election.

Seeing as Carney has essentially capitulated to Trump as it is.

Still think the Conservatives are making a mistake by not changing leader.

I don't think it matters. The ad had its intended effect and had incredible leverage in terms of earned media. It was all over US and international media. No one will care that Trump said Carney apologized (and if Carney confirms it). What matters is that the counter argument to tariffs from a former US President was all over the news for over a week.

...I mean it got 4 Republicans to rethink their positions on tariffs in the Senate for what that's worth.

Trump says whatever he thinks will make him sound powerful and his ideas good ones. It doesn't matter if Carney said it or not, because Trump would likely say he did anyway.
...even if it's against his own interests and the interests of a nation he is supposed to lead.
