I wonder if Buckingham Palace would decline to avoid any political connotations given the situation with Trump.

I can't imagine that - given a) Charles III has already more or less came out and let everyone know where he stand and b) the optics of a sovereign refusing what is arguably one of the most important ceremonial functions.

I know we're not monarchists here on UT, but I'd still like to see the King open Parliament in place of, or alongside his Governor General. It would be a good dig at Trump and strengthen transatlantic ties. Now is not the time for Canada to appear to be standing alone and proud, but instead to show that we have friends, family and historic ties in high places. And to HM's credit, the man is beginning to do his part for Canada.
I am.

Cool. I hope he accepts. For some reason, Trump seems to like him (or did, one day, or one morning, who knows).

Hope not. He is, in fact, our Head of State and it's his parliament to open. It is a completely domestic matter well within his role. I would argue that to not do it would be deleterious to the image of the Monarchy.

Without derailing too much, but Trump always likes people with certain social status... Political lines don't matter as much, wealth and class do.

Think about the people he admires and surrounds himself with, many are wealthy, have higher order prestige backgrounds etc. Anyone he hates, is, ironically, his base (the average Joe), with Carney and King Charles III falling into the first category.

You do not announce that you have invited someone like King Charles or Donald Trump if you do not already know they will accept the invitation.
Ya, that's a really good point we forgot about. At that level, the protocol is highly managed with a lot of background scurrying. It's not like inviting a classmate to Johnny's birthday party.

Prime Minister Mark Carney just annonuced that he will appoint a new Cabinet the week of May 12th, that Parliament will resume on May 26th, and that on May 27th for the Speech of the Throne, that instead of the Governor General reading, that King Charles will come to Canada and read the Speech of the Throne. This will be first time since 1977 that a monarch reads Speech of the Throne. In addition he announced GST cut for homes, an intention to remove all interprovincial trade barriers by Canada Day, changes to the bail system, and changes to the international student/TFW program (capped at 5%). He also announced that he will not seek a formal agreement with the NDP during this Parliament and that instead the Liberals will work with all parties in the house.

Seems like it is happening.

It is funny, I was passing through a reddit comment that was saying the exact thing this morning.

CTV is now reporting PP will run in Battle River—Crowfoot and the incumbent will resign, it's a rural Alberta riding and essentially one of the safest Conservative ridings in Canada with 80% support in recent votes.

Carney confirms he will travel to the White House next week.

He probably feels he has to but Carney rushing to meet Trump at the white house could be mistake. Trump is already coming to Canada for the G7 next month, why not meet him there on the sidelines? Or wait until you name a cabinet and take your top lieutenants with you.

The visit will be a huge test for Carney and could easily go off the rails, a la Zelensky's. JD Vance will be there and could decide to throw grenades at Carney as a favour to his friend Jivani. Trump's hoard of Maga-influencers will also be there to possibly muck-up the visit. Remember Marjorie Taylor Green's boyfriend chastising Zelensky about not wearing a suit? What kind of crazy questions/comments will they throw his way? (Those pictures of Carney next to Ghislaine Maxwell?)
Alternatively, any images of Carney laughing and joking with Trump could rub people the wrong way as well. He just spent a campaign telling Canadians that Trump wanted our land and destroy our economy.

He'll have to carefully thread the needle.

I'm a huge proponent of CANZUK. So I'm fully onboard with the King coming to Canada to deliver the throne speech.

Hopefully Anthony Albanese can win in Australia and the King will do the same for them.

Trump claims he admires the King. Now with the King visiting Canada, Trump will lower his tone regarding his "51st state" remarks and show us some respect.
