I wonder if Buckingham Palace would decline to avoid any political connotations given the situation with Trump.
Why should that be relevant to opening the 45th Canadian Parliament?I wonder if Buckingham Palace would decline to avoid any political connotations given the situation with Trump.

I am.I know we're not monarchists here on UT, but I'd still like to see the King open Parliament in place of, or alongside his Governor General. It would be a good dig at Trump and strengthen transatlantic ties. Now is not the time for Canada to appear to be standing alone and proud, but instead to show that we have friends, family and historic ties in high places. And to HM's credit, the man is beginning to do his part for Canada.
Cool. I hope he accepts. For some reason, Trump seems to like him (or did, one day, or one morning, who knows).
Hope not. He is, in fact, our Head of State and it's his parliament to open. It is a completely domestic matter well within his role. I would argue that to not do it would be deleterious to the image of the Monarchy.I wonder if Buckingham Palace would decline to avoid any political connotations given the situation with Trump.
Without derailing too much, but Trump always likes people with certain social status... Political lines don't matter as much, wealth and class do.For some reason, Trump seems to like him (or did, one day, or one morning, who knows)
Me too, but as a Brit-born Canuck I may be biased.I am.
Of course he has.Cool. I hope he accepts.
Ya, that's a really good point we forgot about. At that level, the protocol is highly managed with a lot of background scurrying. It's not like inviting a classmate to Johnny's birthday party. You do not announce that you have invited someone like King Charles or Donald Trump if you do not already know they will accept the invitation.
Better than some MP's. He'll be ok.HM's French might be rough for the throne speech.
It is funny, I was passing through a reddit comment that was saying the exact thing this morning.Without derailing too much, but Trump always likes people with certain social status... Political lines don't matter as much, wealth and class do.
Think about the people he admires and surrounds himself with, many are wealthy, have higher order prestige backgrounds etc. Anyone he hates, is, ironically, his base (the average Joe), with Carney and King Charles III falling into the first category.
