Ohhh boy.

That said, it looks like a lot of the votes actually came from Roger Kotch so I'm curious if the results were misentered. Not that it makes anything better because it draws a lot more into question.

Well if the city wanted to make the case through negligence that Vote Tabulator Machines are better, they certainly have done so whether intentional or not.

It's not shocking that there are a lot of people who want to make this A Thing, but it's not A Thing, at least if the Western Standard article is all we have to go on. By the standard they use, I'd bet that most of the councillors should've recused themselves.
This is a very Trumpian response btw.

if she’s not voting on that funding and where it is going, and if she’s not actively working for the NPO, what’s the conflict? Also, we’re talking about dollars in the low 5 figures…. This isn’t some massive conspiracy. The city has grants for these sorts of initiatives all the time.

Most councillors stand to gain/lose more on their primary residences through zoning decisions. And those gains aren’t subject to income tax like a grant to a NPO that Ashley’s husband might take a small salary from…

You're ethically flexible. I'm not the same.

Show us a decision that she took part in that furthered her or her spouse’s interests.
I'll let you do the digging friend. People warn me not to post here. So I'm quiet now.

However, people need to not blindly follow their party, right or left, which clearly happens here.

I’ve looked. I’ve read the Western Standard article. The article itself admits they did not find any examples of her voting while in a conflict of interest. They made a vague allegation that voting on the full zoning bylaw renewal could have been seen as furthering YEGarden Suites, which is such a stretch.

EVERY councillor has potential conflicts of interest because they are all people with families and private interests. The thing that matters is what happens when those conflicts arise in their work. For Salvador, it appears that she has always acted appropriately.

If we can finally put this Western Standard non-story to bed and move on now...

Election results:

There are only 3 members of the Better Edmonton party who are elected to City Council, including Karen Principe; the rest of them are all independent. All incumbents have been re-elected except for Jennifer Rice.

I approve of this new Mayor and City Council!

What a dramatic flip... "In Ward sipiwiyiniwak, the initial tally showed just six votes separating Darrell Friesen as the frontrunner from Thu Parmar. On Tuesday night, Edmonton Elections ordered a recount due to the close result. On Wednesday evening, the city's website posted a win for Parmar with 30.36 per cent of the votes over Friesen’s 27.5 per cent. The results showed Parmar finished ahead of Friesen by more than 600 votes." CBC

Place your bets early. My conspiracy theory is that either Kotch or Friesen tried to rig the election by having insiders volunteer to become tabulators, then "erroneously" put in some of Thu's votes for Kotch.

I have no evidence, but a recount only moves Kotch (who wasn't well liked in the ward) votes to Thu, who was largely considered the frontrunner? Here's hoping some sort of interference gets proven, and we stop using this stupid manual counting mechanism.

I think we need to think about Hanlon's razor here: Never ascribe to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity. My guess is that someone put all the votes for Parmar at one polling station in the Kotch pile by accident.
