Raised platforms don't eliminate the need to deploy the ramp, they just enable the short ramp to be deployed instead of the long ramp.

Our current streetcars are not capable of maintaining a constant ride height so it is impossible to build level-boarding platforms for them.

It's honestly less about the ramp and more about the height. I ride these streetcars all the time and I've lost count (easily dozens of times in the last year), how many times I've had to help people into the door because the gap between the street and the step is quite high. It's usually older people and people with canes but it happens all the time and yah, it's a problem.

Today's update on King & Church

Today the TTC are busily repairing the concrete around the tracks going east from Jarvis - there were some very rough margins east of George so great to get them fixed. I remain pleasantly surprised that the track repair silo @ TTC actually heard from the major construction silo and are scheduling these repairs while the King cars are on diversion.

Over the weekend the City finished removing all the old streetcar track at the Church/King intersection and seem to have excavated as deep as they need to pour the new track base(s). I assume they will now be working on watermains before pouring the new track bases but it does all seem to be moving along quite fast.

From outside my window I can see they're doing some kind of railwork on King b/w Church and Sherbourne. Coned-off with some digging going on.

Presumably work on repairing the margins (see above) - they are working east from Jarvis as of this morning.

EDIT. I just walked over to look at it is work on the 'margins'. There was an area of very bad margins east of George St and it is currently being excavated, I assume they will pour new concrete today.

The TTC have replaced the VERY deteriorated margins on King St between George & Frederick plus one section of concrete in middle of the tracks. I assume they have now moved on to other blocks- the plan appears to see them moving eastwards but not sure where.

UPDATE: Now working on margins etc at Princess.

From an up-close look, it doesn't appear that they're touching the sidewalks and so I have little hope that they're going to update them to reflect the King Street Transitway configuration. This is a streetcar stop so after this much demolition, rather than rebuilding a road and installing a temporary transit platform, they should be rebuilding the sidewalk up to the streetcar lane.

Olivia Chow has over the next year and a half an opportunity at setting the King Street Pilot wins in stone because if we happen to get a more conservative mayor in 2026, I think we should start to worry that King Street will be reverted back to full car access and the streetcar in mixed traffic with nothing but jersey barriers, traffic signs and some paint in the way.

I don't think they'd want to start construction on that until after the Richmond/Adelaide detour ends. So earliest is 2028? So no point wasting political capital before the next election.

Given the pilot started under Tory's watch, I don't see it being guaranteed it will go.

The work on King to 'smarten it up' is going to follow the replacement of the two watermains (Spadina to, I think, Parliament). Replacing watermains takes years of planning and that work really needs to be coordinated so everyone still gets water while they are happening. Makes zero sense to fix up the street now and dig it up in 2-3 years - much as I would like to get it finished!

LOL impeccable timing

To be honest, if they can move some of the cars off of Richmond and Adelaide to running through on King, it would be better for everyone right now.

You're right, move them off the road completely.
