It would probably make more sense now to build a new hospital in the growing parts of the city that are far from the existing hospitals, but fast and cheap are probably the parts that appeal to the UCP.

For decades Alberta prided itself on having above average levels of health care and other services, lower taxes and a budget surplus, but now we seem to be really falling behind many other parts of Canada in services. With oil prices declining, we are going to have an even larger deficit. I feel the UCP is going to soon have difficulty trying to sell poor services and a high deficit to Albertans.
 
I think there’s an argument for a southside hospital. But there’s also a lot of efficiencies to these hospitals already having admin, train connections, and their central locations are still more accessible to more people on average than a deeeep south location. I’m happy to see us build out in existing locations if there’s capacity and savings for it.

Keep in mind, there has been no committment to build. This is just planning what building could look like. The timing of this is pretty clearly done for the planning to be done just in time for the election so the expansions can be an election promise but without having the government commit real money. These plans have as much value right now as Smith's promise to build the south hospital

You need to get out more. There is 100,000 people living in Heritage Valley right now and a majority of the Edmontons growth is on the south side and will continue to do so into the future.

Also, the hospital was already under construction so the greatest efficiency would be to see it through, particularly given how many years went into its planning and design. I agree that it's also good to maximize our use of existing assets, but in this case I think it's a matter of "yes, and".

The land was cleared and leveled but they never got the deep utilities started. Still a stack of Storm and water lines piled up on the south end of the project site. As for Covenant projects, This is the GoA handing off health services to private interests. RAH and the U should have had additional work done. and being at both the last 12 weeks they are both getting as bad as the Miz was. And we forget that there is a new surgical centre being built at Enoch along with a recovery centre.

While I don't know the details, a case could probably be made for the Miz being in the worst shape of all the current hospitals. It is the oldest next to the Alex, which has had more work done.

Grey Nuns is the newest, but now pushing almost 40 it isn't so young anymore either. So I think a case can be made for work being done there too. However, after almost a decade of not much being done with our hospitals and a lot of growth, there is a strong case for a lot to be done, including for a new facility in the south west which has had a lot of growth.
 
The grey nuns and mis are not level 1 trauma centres, so even with the bed increases there are inherit limits to what services those hospitals are able to provide. Not every speciality/hospital service that exists in those hospitals will benefit equally. Don’t get me wrong, I welcome the expansion of both hospitals; there’s just no way to get around the fact that we need a new hospital as well.
