Its pretty valid to be skeptical of more tax money going to Katz. Sure we have a fancy new arena downtown but I know it personally rubs me the wrong way when we payed for a lot of that building only to get charged $30 for a beer and bag of popcorn. I hope there are stipulations in the funding about Katz needing to develop the lots that the province is paying for site servicing and we aren't just paying to increase the value of the properties and have Katz sit on them and sell in 10 years for a massive profit.
The CoE will own the events centre.

City Council passed the following motion yesterday:
  1. That Administration apply to the Province to extend the Capital City Downtown Community Revitalization Levy by 10 years to 2044 and incorporate the projects listed in Attachment 3 of the March 5, 2025, Urban Planning and Economy report UPE02445, with the addition of the Winspear Center Expansion project and, if approved, prepare an amended Community Revitalization Levy Bylaw and return to a future City Council Public Hearing.
Amendment:
  1. That Administration provide an independent (as determined by Administration) analysis of the existing OEG study for the Event Park and Site Servicing as part of the Public Hearing process and that the analysis include what current projects could be enhanced to provide the best overall revitalization of our downtown as well as the high-level modelling of the timing of CRL funding for the projects in Attachment 3 of the March 5, 2025 UPE report UPE02445.

OEG will run the place with Edmonton City owning -- that seems like the ideal solution that enables Provincial participation as well on the financing side. I can't imagine there is much room for complaint here.
Oh, you know there is always room for complaint here! But I agree this is a good solution, it cleans up and fixes up this area which will encourage more development here and nearby.

It also allows more events to occur here and if necessary the new facility's use can integrate with that of Rogers, and OEG has the experience and proximity to best run it.

Isn't this the worse of both worlds? OEG will reap profits from events without having to pay the entire capital expense for construction and the City will be saddled with an asset that has diminishing value and may eventually turn into a significant financial liability (i.e. the coliseum).

I don't think an event center in the CBD can be compared to an arena which had a single tenant. Cultural spaces are important, and Edmonton doesn't have enough of them downtown.

OEG will do a good job operating this space, just like how MSG operates Radio City Music Hall in New York.

I understand the opposition, but I'm not seeing the same opportunities coming from other avenues. We have two theatres which should be open to the public and restored, but are instead decaying.

I don’t think there’s any space for this in the current setup, but a cosm would be sick for ice district.

Maybe not right in ID, but there's certainly no lack of space in and around DT. Their first couple locations, in LA and Dallas, were built adjacent to giant parking lots, but it looks like the new locations currently under construction are being built right in DT Detroit and Atlanta. I'd love to see this here.

Here's my pipe dream ignoring all lot ownership, and even the actual logistics. Put it in the parking lot to the west of the CN tower. Close that weird little strip of 104 Ave. Leave "Backyard" there if you want, but landscape that little pie area better. Do a cool re-do of the old recycling building to the east of The Backyard. Ok, back to reality for me now...

I'm all for a new stadium for football, soccer or concerts and putting it near the arena is ideal in my mind as it would centralize pretty much all the major sports in our city. The baseball stadium is somewhat close by too.
I’d like to see Katz Group doing it in ID.
