DRC Chair - expects to "have the agreement signed by August......." Yet there is Janz again - trying to mess things up again.....maybe he should be back to living in his mom's basement and let the big boys play house.......
 
Janz's views on this shouldn't be a surprise to anybody on this forum or in general Edmonton politics tbh. He's been nothing but consistent on this issue. We'll probably see the mayor (who's outgoing) bat for this project anyway since it's something he's clearly worked hard on with the provincial government.

As much as I dislike the whole situation of OEG getting even more financial support, I think there should be more voices that this investment still pales in comparison to what Calgary got.

Unless the province is counting the CRL expansion as part of the cash, in which case, that's extremely dumb and should be called out.
 
I suppose everyone is entitled to their opinions including city councilors. However, unless I am missing something here it doesn't make sense for the city to hold a referendum on what is mainly funded by the province and other funding sources.
 
The city is desperate for development downtown and has invested hundreds of millions to the benefit of developers. A pedway, a new park incentives to kick start Ice district 2. In principle you can be against the whole concept which is fine but the stark reality staring facing our pathetic downtown is something had to be done. At what point will these incentives come to the point that it is self sustaining is very elusive I can only hope it happens in my lifetime.
 
Does anyone know if Manulife place is getting any public money to enhance their space to attract new business?

I know or think there were some smaller grants for small businesses to enhance their storefront or am I off on that?
 
I'm not fully on board with the notion that there isn't enough 'amenities' downtown to attract folks. In a few square blocks there's:

royal Alberta museum
the art gallery
Citadel Theatre complex (3 stages)
Winspear concert hall (soon to be 2 halls)
Landmark cinemas (9 screens)
Rogers place.
main library
legislature grounds.
warehouse park (coming soon)
farmer's market
Norquest College
MacEwan University

all within walking distance. plus bars and restaurants on almost every block.

what do Windermere or Collingwood or Ambleside or any of the myriad SW, SE or NE developments offer in comparison ?

I've always seen Edmonton as a more family-oriented city. If developments included green spaces and more housing options (like the townhouses as a podium in CX or Eleanor), more people would be interested in living in DT. I think DT is going in the right direction by adding the warehouse park, but it definitely should invest in a type of neighbourhood renewal and include more greenery overall.

There's a format that I saw sometimes in Vancouver, that includes ground floor townhomes, but on the third story of the townhomes they let out onto the building podium roof, with large secure planted gardens and play areas for children. I think that would be really well suited in downtown Edmonton too. Of course you can have a tower on the podium too, but even without the tower I think that would go over well.

One part that isn't family friendly at all is there is no elementary or Jr high right in the core. The closest are Victoria or St.Joes/St..Catherines, but nothing at all right in the core.
