Seems like Edmonton is fairly competitive overall, maybe a little less downtown focused but occupancy and average nightly rate is right there with Calgary. I agree bring on a new player with so many great options. My list of sites would be (Old BMO, multiple 104th street options, Ice District Phase 2, Jasper Ave warehouse park by BPs.

How Place Matters: Leveraging Edmonton's Assets for a Vibrant Future

Tuesday, June 24, 2025
7:00 pm – 8:30 pm
Stanley A. Milner (Downtown)

Join Zita Cobb, Founder and CEO of Shorefast and Fogo Island Inn, and Mary Rowe, President and CEO of the Canadian Urban Institute, for a provocative conversation about potential futures for Canada’s local economies. They make the case for a new way of thinking about value, development, and investment.

Question:

We are hosting what is arguably our top event ever that we will see in this fair city in terms of exposure, national/int'l shots, visitors and most importantly media.

Can someone explain to me why Downtown has not had a full flush of streets, power washed sidewalks, tidy up?

Why are the planters on Jasper, in LRT raised planters, parks unplanted? Sure it might be a couple of weeks early (another issue for another day), but this is 'OUR TIME' to shine.

I also hope that we see a TON of EPS etc. presence not just during games, but daytime and nighttime for visitors and have them posted at key LRT stations for most of the day.

We go around the world to promote this place and yet when served something on a plate in front of us seem to have a bar so low that it's subgrade.

Assuming that we will see a coordinated department-wide review of the say hotel district, Churchill, 104st, RHW, Jasper, 104ave, all major ETS stations with streets flooded and sidewalks power washed tonight?!?!?

Here's hoping we see a lot of action by City forces, EPS, ETS, businesses etc. in the next few fews to make this place shine!

Can you make a few phone calls? You could have been more proactive with these questions and asked the city sooner? You have connections with DT folk whereas the lot of us are simply Schmubs with no contacts.

See, therein lies the rub.

We have dozens (hundreds?) of COE, Explore Edmonton, Edmonton Global, Etc. folks whose field is event management, promotion, tourism etc.

Why should that fall on a schmuck like myself or joe-citizen?

Because they're clearly complacent/careless/blind to it. God, I feel like I call 311 every second day, and it's for stuff that seems so obvious (streetlights burned out on 3 blocks along 109 St required four phone calls before someone didn't just check it off their to do list without doing anything about it). My husband now routinely calls/texts transit security about our delightful drug-loving "vulnerables" in the LRT entrances. Maybe if enough noise is made, eventually someone will step up and actually do their job? I have to hope that our voices can make a difference.

To think that Edmonton is perhaps the first Canadian team to appear in back-to-back Stanley Cup finals in nearly 40 years, all eyes will be on Edmonton. Can people show at least a little respect for our city?

Who? The locals? Or the tourists?

I'm confused....does the city actually look like crap or are we dramatizing things here? I'll see for myself when I get home on Thursday. Is DT at least looking like it always does?

It’s like we’re hosting a backyard wedding at our house, and not only have we not gone the extra mile with decor, hospitality, and thoughtfulness, but we’ve also forgotten to cut the grass and sweep the sidewalk out front. The grass still has some pee patches and there’s a plastic bag stuck on a tree branch.

It's nice to see the Oilers playoff action giving fans an opportunity to visit our downtown. For far too long, we read stories about downtown being dirty, or having problems with social disorder. When do we ever get to enjoy downtown?

Great analogy.

Sure the backyard works 'as is', but what have we done to spruce up the driveway as you approach the house, did we trim the grass, plant the annuals, perhaps a fresh coat of paint for the deck etc.
