University-Rosedale updates:

Diana Yoon, a housing activist and former federal NDP candidate, registered last week. It's expected she will have the backing of a lot of NDP brass. Website: www.voteyoon.ca

Dana Fisher, a legal aid lawyer, has also joined the race. She has a background in union organizing and labour law, and like Yoon, appears to be running on a left wing platform. Website: www.danafisher.ca

Terri Hawkes, an actor and Annex Residents' Association member, has also registered. Hawkes is active in a lot of local Annex-area planning matters. Website: www.terri-hawkes.com

While she hasn't officially declared, it's expected that incumbent Dianne Saxe will run for re-election.

Interesting to see so much interest in a ward with an incumbent who is likely seeking reelection. This is certainly a case for ranked ballots, but even if Toronto wanted to have them for its municipal elections, it’s barred by the Ford regime.

I suspect the main reason there is so much interest in University-Rosedale is how close the result was in 2022. Also, as noted earlier in the thread, there is a sense, whether right or not, that Saxe has been wrong on certain issues and/or missing in action.

Can you identify the issues where you think some constituents feel she has been offside?

I had a quick swirl of the sites you posted above, and for those listing platform points it reads mostly as an endorsement of the status quo. I didn't see any one single out an issue on which they felt Saxe was wrong and they had a better idea. (but perhaps I missed it)

She would rather fight Doug Ford than represent the actual ward. She's tone deaf, the reality is, not everyone wants bike lanes, no matter how many studies there are, and that's their right. And the same reason why Doug still had a strong base.

If anything she'll help Vincent Crisanti win.
She was very public in her last campaign about living near High Park (and having roots there). I think she grew up in Ward 1, did she move back?

From the article:
Brown grew up in the ward and studied there at Humber College. But she lives downtown now. She said there isn’t enough to keep her “anchored” to the area — not enough affordable housing, grocery stores, cultural venues.

“I would love to move back, but I’d need better housing options,” she said. “If a councillor doesn’t step in and build affordable housing, I won’t be able to.”

Brown said a lot of people don’t live where they work and that voters should remember they’re electing a “professional” to advocate on their behalf, not a “friend.” Many people in Etobicoke North commute downtown for work, she said, she would just be doing the reverse.

It just seems so counter to her entire campaign about being community oriented. It's risks being perceived as parachute candidate.

I can’t speak to any specific issue. However, as I noted earlier, there’s high expectations (perhaps too high) for councillors in downtown ridings where there’s a plethora of very engaged activists, BIAs and residents groups. You’re unlikely to please them all.

I am not in her Ward but have had some communication with Ms Saxe as she is active on some issues that interest me. I have found her remarkably responsive and open to discussion. In general, I support her ideas/positions and certainly give her top marks for 'being in the game'. If I were in her Ward I would certainly support her!

Feels like an advertisement for her work more than anything else. At least Diana and Dana have presented ideas of what they'd like to do beyond appearing at comic conventions.

I give candidates the benefit of the doubt for having a thin platform in the early days of an election. A lot of good ideas for platforms come from door-knocking and chatting with constituents.

The sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive private conversations, said that a council run was one of several options Erskine-Smith was considering, including continuing to pursue the Ontario Liberal leadership or moving to the private sector. But they said his interest in a municipal campaign was heightened after his conversation with Chow.

The meeting was first reported by Policorner, while the contents of their discussion were not reported.

In an interview with the Star, Erskine-Smith acknowledged that he discussed a potential council run with the mayor, but said the topic came up “in passing” and was not the focus of the conversation. Both he and a spokesperson for Chow described the discussion as merely a catch-up between the two politicians.

Former Liberal MPP and MP Han Dong just announced he’s challenging incumbent councillor Jamaal Myers in Scarborough North.

I wonder if Han will run a joint “Gong-Dong” ticket with the mayoral candidate?
