That Dong would make a bid for Scarborough North makes sense; after all, Jamaal Myers represents a ward which wouldn't normally elect progressives and really got in there by default because incumbent Cynthia Lai died and he was the most viable person left standing (which, in its way, says more about incumbent advantages and political "machines" than anything).

I'm not sure if ideological positions will matter as much in Scarborough North as the dynamics of diaspora politics, as 1/3 of residents of the ward are of Chinese ethnicity. Dong has deep connections to the Chinese community, both as a former MPP in Trinity-Spadina and MP in Don Valley North.

Edit: Dong was MP in Don Valley North

True, which further underlines Jamaal Myers' incongruity (as well as Olivia Chow's Scarborough North landslide in the mayoral byelection). At most, he's like a Malvern tail wagging the Agincourt/Milliken dog. So it may be interesting to see how he fares, as an incumbent, vs an electoral Sino-machine that's no longer hampered by the inconvenient eleventh-hour passing of their designated standard-bearer.

It would not surprise me if Myers' support for sixplexes in his ward is used as campaign fodder by his opponents. His ward was the only suburban ward to opt-in.
