Reporters won't be allowed to travel with Poilievre election campaign, Conservatives say

The Conservative party is breaking from tradition and will not be allowing media onboard planes and buses to cover leader Pierre Poilievre’s election campaign.

In an email Tuesday, national campaign director Jenni Byrne said costs for travel have “risen considerably,” as has the capacity for digital and remote access to public events.

Byrne also said in recent years, media outlets have chosen to tag staff from local bureaus to cover events rather than fly journalists from Ottawa across the country for the entire duration of the campaign.

Byrne said her team wants to stress that the campaign will ensure “strong, fair, and equitable media access.”

For decades, federal election campaigns for the main political parties have provided seats on leaders’ tours, with the media organizations paying the party for the travel and other fees, so that journalists can access events, ask questions to hold leaders to account and closely observe the campaigns.

Byrne says steps have been taken to ensure that Canadian media will be able to “share any public events, participate in events on the ground, and ask questions remotely and in-person.”

Byrne said those steps include providing bureaus with two to three days’ notice on event locations, providing full conferencing services for media availabilities and providing “a dedicated resource based in the Ottawa campaign office” to help coordinate travel and technological logistics.

OTTAWA, ON, March 24, 2025 /CNW/ - The Leaders' Debates Commission today unveils the location and dates of the upcoming leaders' debates as well as the decision date for the invitation of the party leaders.

The two debates will be held at the Maison de Radio-Canada in Montréal, Québec on Wednesday, April 16 at 8 p.m. EDT (in French) and Thursday, April 17 at 7 p.m. EDT (in English).

The decision to use existing technical facilities and studios was taken jointly by the Commission and the debates producer. It is a fiscally prudent and cost-effective approach that will guarantee high-quality production standards.

The TVA French debate was cancelled after Liberal Leader Mark Carney did not commit to participating in the debate.

Of note here, CBC is reporting that TVA requested each party pay them $75,000 to cover their broadcast costs of the debate, which would generally only be available to be watched inside Quebec.
Apparently Carney was the first to say "Ya... no, I'm out."

Yeah...someone like Carney wouldn't just refuse a debate unless something was really off or skewed about it.

Toronto city councillor Jennifer McKelvie is the official Liberal candidate in Ajax.

I'm not sure about that........

Whatever Carney's merits (or lack as some may see it); his French is weak. He's going to be heavily prepped for the existing French debate as it is.

I can imagine the thought of prepping for another seeming like something that would be low value. A lot of time and energy for something not likely to goose his numbers.

The only real benefit would likely go to the BQ here, while all other parities would be at a disadvantage...since no one outside of Quebec would really see this. I feel like this is one of those evolution debates hosted by creationists for creationists and stacked with a creationist audience, with the end result being skewed for their position and whichever debater agrees with them...

...so I think Mr. Carney should have better opportunities to brush up on his French than having going through this, IMO. >.<

CPC out with a promise to out-do Carney's tax
I don’t need a tax cut! I need a country that is buttoned down and ready for the regional and global economic battle of my lifetime, with steady, competent and well-connected leadership that can grow and benefit from global partnerships and with access to the worldwide corridors of power. We must be at every table possible - for starters end the two front war, aka the trade dispute with China asap and expand the CETA.

Don't disagree, at all.

You didn't see me endorsing either one.

At the very least, any cut should have been much more targeted at lower-middle-income earners and down, and any spillover to higher earners recovered.

I still don't think that would be the best policy in the circumstances, but it would be more economically stimulative targeting the money at people who need it, and being able to deliver a more meaningful number in the process.

Unfortunately, people see "tax cut" and don't think beyond that. They are then the first to complain when a tax cut ends up resulting in a service cut that impacts them directly.

So yes, I want nice things, and I understand that costs money. And yes, I want health care, education, social services, clean drinking water and more available so that all Canadians are taken care of, even if they are services that I don't personally use.

That said, I also appreciate and expect oversight and competence when it comes to managing that public money.

Oh, and I don't want people leaking war secrets on Signal.

"Liberal MP and former cabinet minister Sean Fraser is cancelling his plans to retire from politics and will announce today he will seek re-election in his Nova Scotia riding of Central Nova, CBC News has learned.

Multiple sources say Fraser made the decision Monday after a phone call from Liberal Leader Mark Carney asking him to reconsider."

Yeah, that's a huge blow to CPC. Fraser runs in the McKay's old riding and winning that back would have been a big indicator for CPC fortunes on election night.
