From Belize? I know that woman (she mentioned doing an interview). She is quite upset that she won't likely be able to vote because there is no online voting option.

This reminds me alot of the Hungarian elections. I get a ballot mailed to me but by the time it is sent to me and then when it arrives back to Hungary the election is over.

there needs to be a better way.

I read another article with snowbirds in a Central American country (I forget) where they only get main once a week.

I find it difficult to feel sorry for people who are privileged enough to have multiple residences in different countries, especially those privileged enough to have the chance to escape our winters for somewhere they view as superior. World's smallest violin for these torontolife-esque folks.

The ability to exercise one of the most basic rights of citizenship should be the great equalizer. Any 'snowbirds' that I know don't view their winter location as "superior" - they just fundamentally dislike winter. Age will do that.

I don't feel sorry for them, but they do have a right to vote. It's 2025, there should be an online option. That also helps housebound people in Northern Ontario, for example. They are simply trying to exercise their right to vote. And not all snowbirds are living a Toronto Life-esque winter. Have you seen snowbird trailer parks?

Mail in ballots are already a flashpoint for the right, online ballots would be another level of grifting about stolen elections.

Complaining about online voting doesn't mean that it's really a problem, of course
No, but people losing confidence in the electoral system, real or otherwise, can have consequences when they feel it's rigged. Jan6.

But people saying/believing it's rigged when it's not has real consequences!

I have used them very effectively in a municipal election. Had to jump through a bunch of security checks before actually voting. Conspiracy theorists are going to see conspiracies everywhere.

I'm cool to online voting. Beyond the reality that no system is absolutely secure, any system that has an open portal to the public is highly vulnerable, leading to concerns of hacking, interference and loss of confidence.

Mail ballots, properly executed, addresses the majority of the needs of ex-pat voters, shut-ins, etc.

I mean you moved to some remote country thousands of kilometers away. Is there really an expectation of voting?

They didn’t move there. They are there for a short period of time and an election happened to be called. I think the pooint is that winter isn’t a great time for an election for a number of reasons.

People are allowed to winter wherever they want, but i'm not going to feel as if they're hard-done-by because they can't vote from that location in enough time.
