What an asinine remark (by Ford)

To let people in who can't see previews and won't click through....

Ford made an crass allusion to bringing back the death penalty in some off-cuff remarks to the "London Police Service’s Chief’s gala appreciation dinner and awards night”...

From the article:

“I don’t even go 25 years. I send ‘em right to sparky and then we’ll take everything from there,” he added to sparse clapping and audible gasps in an audience"

Sounds like it bombed with a crowd mostly likely to appreciate it......

Sorry, I thought the headline was enough in this case ;)

Nothing wrong w/that thought............but I'm betting you're unaware how some see posts on UT.

So let me show you what I see from your post (screenshot)

What headline?

NDP Canadidate Natasha Doyle-Merrick for Eglinton-Lawrence withdraws from the race to prevent vote splitting. I'm assuming her name will still be on the ballot? If so, I wonder how many won't know and will still vote for her... In the 2022 Toronto election, Dianne Saxe won University-Rosedale by just 123 votes while 1,004 went to two candidates who had dropped out of the race nearly two months before people went to the polls.

I meant clicking the link--even if you can't read the article behind the paywall, you can see the headline, which included the "old sparky" reference ... and strangely enough when I first posted the link, the URL spoke volumes, but I shall endeavour to do better :).

If you press the "enter" key ("return" if you are using a Mac) before pasting the URL, a preview of the link with the headline should appear. Let's try this:

According to the following link, the deadline for candidates to file candidacy papers for the election was 2:00 pm today, but there doesn't seem to be information on withdrawal deadlines:

Based on the fact that Doyle-Merrick has already come to the conclusion her candidacy would cause vote-splitting, my assumption is she has already contacted the election officials about her intent to withdraw from the race.

Doug Ford compares ODSP and Ontario Works recipients to lazy youths watching The Flintstones:

In other words, Ford calls poor people “lazy spendthrifts.”

I am an ODSP recepient myself. As someone who lives in Eglinton-Lawrence, I will be voting Liberal this election, since my NDP candidate, Natasha Doyle-Merrick, withdrew to prevent vote-splitting.

A principled move, putting the public interest, before party.

I really like that. My sincere appreciation to her.

As she did not submit her name at the deadline, she will not appear on the ballot.

Of note the Liberals will not have a candidate against the NDP incumbent in Windsor West. Where it will be Lisa Gretzky, as incumbent against the tory offering. Apologies to my friends in the Greens but they are not contending in that riding.

He is the gift that keeps on giving, isn’t he?

The Ontario PC strategists are afraid of Doug going off script every time he opens his mouth.

I mean, “sparky” was never a thing in Canada and it’s not really a thing in the US anymore. (In the 27 states that still have the death penalty, only a few actively carry out executions, and all but one use “old squrty” now.) its definitely not a provincial matter anyway. it’s somewhat comforting that even at a police gala there was a cringy reception to that remark, at least.

Indeed, the candidate list for Eglinton-Lawrence only has 3 entries (PC, Liberal, Green).
