I lived right by the Emery Barnes when I was working in Vancouver. The better comparison for it would be the Paul Kane park, IMO.
Edmonton parks department couldn't manage a water feature like this at Warehouse Park. Six figure salaries and a water feature like this is too much for them. Probably time to make some cultural and personal changes at the department. Time to get rid of the bureaucratic dead wood and give some younger more ambitious employees a larger voice because a feature like this should not be out of reach for a city the size of Edmonton.
That's right—nobody should ever be allowed to go outside because sometimes people get stabbed outside. Here's another part of the reality of people hanging out at parks late at night.
MONTREAL — A 22-year-old man is dead and two people are injured after a stabbing in a Montreal park on Saturday night.
Police were called to the scene in the St-Laurent borough at about 9:15 p.m. after a 911 call.
Three injured people were taken to hospital where the 22-year-old was declared dead.
Numerous posters on a variety of threads at Skyrise have commented that crime in downtown Edmonton is a problem that needs to be tackled. And you want Warehouse Park to be a hang out after dark. I feel sorry for you if you have nothing better to do than hang out a park after dark but how does what you've posted make any sense? That's right—nobody should ever be allowed to go outside because sometimes people get stabbed outside.
You do realize sunset in Edmonton in December is 4:15 in the afternoon? Expecting all of our parks in general and those with winter/cold weather features in particular to be avoided after dark makes no sense.Numerous posters on a variety of threads at Skyrise have commented that crime in downtown Edmonton is a problem that needs to be tackled. Emery Barnes is a great park, and I spent a lot of time just chilling there, but very different from O'Daymin Park. It's more concrete-y and the layout itself (and size) is more comparable to Paul Kane Park.I’m sorry, but emery barnes is elite. I’m struggling to believe that it’s inferior haha. Literally sit in the park every time I’m in Vancouver for work before jumping in the train back to the airport.
I think ours will be awesome still. But Emery Barnes has a proper playground, amazing fountain and creek, some beautiful flowers/plants. Hard to imagine we top it. But ours should be unique in its own way too with the northern lights art and dedicated basketball and dog space.
Definitely smaller than o’daymin., but I guess the activations make it feel more like a full park to me whereas Paul Kane is basically a pond.Emery Barnes is a great park, and I spent a lot of time just chilling there, but very different from O'Daymin Park. Whatever Strawman. You and Strawgirl can hang out at the park as much as your little hearts desire. Just don't come a bitching for more law enforcement if some incidents like the one in Montreal happens here too.You do realize sunset in Edmonton in December is 4:15 in the afternoon? As someone that’s lived in both Edmonton and Montreal I’ve spent many great evenings out at parks in both cities with friends - especially Montreal, because the culture lends itself to that. The user you responded to did not commit a strawman, they in fact raised a completely valid point. On the other hand, you’ve made hasty generalization fallacies that parks in both cities are unsafe after dark - and based on what? The Montreal stabbing incident you cited? “Numerous posters on a variety of threads at Skyrise” as you stated in another comment? No one is going to argue that crime in the downtown isn’t a problem in Edmonton or that things have not worsened over the preceding decade in some ways. However, closing parks like this one early will not improve public safety. On the contrary, having foot traffic, businesses open late in the area, etc. will increase safety. I’m not sure why it’s so challenging to understand that a group of teens might want to play basketball in the evening, or why a young uni couple living at the Parks might want to sit outside and have some ice cream on a warm night, etc. Do we really need the government to incessantly police law abiding citizens?Whatever Strawman. Many if not most parks have hours of operation. That's not a hasty generalization. It's a fact. I like your rose colored glasses but would you like to weigh in on why parks have operating hours? As someone that’s lived in both Edmonton and Montreal I’ve spent many great evenings out at parks in both cities with friends - especially Montreal, because the culture lends itself to that. Now you’ve ironically committed a strawman - I was pointing out your hasty generalization that parks are ostensibly unsafe after dark. Now you are misrepresenting my argument by stating that I was referring to operation hours, when I explicitly was referring to park safety in that sentence. See the quote in question:Many if not most parks have hours of operation. That's not a hasty generalization. It's a fact.

Parks having operating hours does not necessarily make it evidence based policy that reduces crime or increases public safety as you are insinuating. Anyways, you have a propensity to take threads off topic with safety issues or politics. I look forward to enjoying this park during the evening, operating hours permitting.I like your rose colored glasses but would you like to weigh in on why parks have operating hours?
