Once this line opens, will there be any desire to extend it further north? For example, i have been hearing a desire to extend this from Finch for well over 30 years.
if the Richmond hill line never gets an upgrade i could see richmond hill pushing for an extension to the richmond hill go station. Its only about 2km from the end of the storage tracks, and though the tmsf would need a rebuild, it looks like pretty low lying fruit on paper. Row is also pretty narrow.
wouldnt be surprised if it turned up on some future viva map like a line 1 extension to wonderland has

Worth noting I guess is that all you would need to do is grade separate Weldrick Drive - as well as provide pedestrian crossings for existing at-grade foot crossings. The corridor is probably wide enough to not upset CN significantly.

I’d rather see it looped into the Spadina side than extended any further
I moved to Toronto in 2005 and "closing the loop" was all the rage, but it really didn't make sense back then and doesn't now.
It doesn't matter where the delay is on the network, there will be the same cascade effects up and down the line at rush hour because of running at 105% of capacity that we try at those times of day, or at least used to, though we'll be back to that point again soon with RTO mandates probably creating at least a 20% increase in demand.

Back then, there was already the choke point of traffic and dozens of buses clogging Yonge from Finch to Steeles and to the north of there. Even with relocation of a lot of big corporate offices from NYCC to Downtown/Southcore, like OTPP, it's still as bad as ever, in fact that may have even made it all worse as more try to drive to Finch.

Getting the subway to a destination like York U did at least make a modicum of sense, rather than the random one stop extension to Downsview from Wilson that preceded that, which was done so "close the loop" was still on the table to satisfy some former City of North York mayor's ego.

Agreed. The two ends of the line are too suburban and too far from each other to make sense. VMC is more than 8km from Yonge!

Even in the pre-TYSSE plan that connected the lines across Steeles, its a long way to go and I don't think it would have been worth it for many riders to go "up and over".

I don't get this desire to close the loop. I am not overly familiar with York Region, but the western leg of line 1 should definitely eventually go to Vaughan Mills and to Wonderland (yes I'm aware it's a seasonal destination).
Next to Wonderland is the Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital and offices for Canada's Wonderland. Likely the office staff work in the off season. Putting in the Line 1 extension to Mayor MacKenzie Drive would mean most of the parking lots will be redeveloped.

I would expect that York region quietly but firmly opposed any loop closing that ruled out an extension into their territory and therefore future shot in the arm for local developers’ land bank potentials.

Any rapid transit expansion should include annexation by the City of Toronto.
